For those who have not lived in America for awhile or for those who have lived in homogenous neighborhoods until attending college, the college experience may be overwhelming. No. 6: Computers and Mathematics. Recent graduates with a degree in computers and mathematics are at an unemployment rate of 8.2%. However, the study found that unemployment in this field varies depending on the major's technical and scientific content. Jobs will still be available for technical computer specialists who have the ability to write software and create new applications. Unfortunately, specialists who use software to manipulate, mine, and relay information will have a tough time getting a job during a recession. Those who invent computer technology will be in greater demand than those who use computer technology.

The CEO of CyberSynchs, a company that allows consumers to sync data between their mobile device and computer, won Innovator of the Year Award at the 2010 Black Enterprise Entrepreneurs Conference, as well as other recognitions, such as Inc. Magazine’s “30 Under 30” and Entrepreneur Magazine's "100 Brilliant Ideas" lists. In 2009, CyberSynchs posted revenues of $2 million; 2010 revenues were expected to double the previous year's because of partnerships with Sun Microsystems, Samsung, and Microsoft BizSpark.

Exposing Students to STEM Earlier

The lack of black people in technology stems from the lack of STEM education. While America doesn’t produce a great number of white scientists, mathematicians and engineers, the disparity hits African Americans a lot stronger. African Americans received just 7 % of all STEM bachelor's degrees, 4 % of master's degrees, and 2 % of PhDs in 2009, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Thankfully, several extra-curricular programs like Black Girls Code are dedicated to teaching children and young adults from underrepresented communities.

With this initiative promising to focus on youth at the beginning of their educational careers, students will become exposed to all that STEM has to offer in the classroom.

November 13, 2011 was a historical day for Blacks in tech as CNN's Black In America 4: The New Promised Land: Silicon Valley aired. The documentary followed eight entrepreneurs from around the country who relocated to Silicon Valley in the summer to launch their Web tech start-ups as part of the NewME Accelerator Program.
The documentary alone will not create a 100% meritocracy in Silicon Valley but has sparked discussion that didn't exist about Black Web tech start-ups. Kloudco founder Hank Williams did an interesting analyst in his "Tech Industry Silence is Deafening on #BlackInAmerica" post. Only three people from Rob Schoble's Influential Tech Industry list joined the discussion. With #BlackInAmerica being a trending topic the night of the doc’s premier, it’s not likely these tech savvy people missed it. As a note, popular start-up publication, TechCrunch, which routinely reports on the demo days and does extensive profiles of the other accelerator participants, didn't mention it at all. In response, here’s my 5-point recap. —Hajj Flemings

Get the Right Team:

For anyone in a position of power you need to have an efficient team to produce results. According to Davis, when hiring in the education field there are a few things you need to look for that will ensure you’ve found the right match. “Make sure teachers know their content, care about kids and have patience to work with struggling learners,” he says. “You have them walk through how to deal with struggling learners and to plan lessons to deal with multiple types of learning.”
