Whether it’s done face to face or on social media, threatening the president is a federal offense. Donte Jamar Sims, 22, learned that the hard way when a judge sentenced the North Carolina native to six months in prison after threatening to assassinate President Obama on Twitter, The Root reports.

While the 2012 Democratic National Convention went on, Sims sent a series of tweets detailing how he planned to kill the president. He now claims he was under the influence of marijuana and has since written an apology letter to the president.

Sims’s tweets have yet to be deleted since he posted them last September.
