UBR Spotlight: Kimberlee Burt and The Business of Childcare

This week on The Urban Business Roundtable, UBR Contributor Bryant Monteilh sits down with Kimberlee Burt, owner of the Chicago-based early childhood learning center A Child’s Place. Burt, who began her career as an educator, parlayed her professional experience into her entrepreneurial venture now has more than 50 children currently enrolled. She has been featured in Ebony and Today’s Chicago Woman magazines and has been recognized by the Women’s Business Development Center, the nation’s largest business assistance center for women, with its Rising Star Award. Burt joins the Roundtable to share her journey from a career in education to starting a childhood learning business.

Also, UBR Contributor Renita D. Young talks with award-winning investment manager Jesse B. Brown, author of Pay Yourself First: The African American Guide to Financial Success and Security (Wiley). Brown, the CEO of Krystal Investments, a money management firm, was named Investment Advisor of the Year by Putnam Investment Mutual Funds.

In addition, in my “Alfred’s Notepad” segment, I talk about the importance of not just engaging in social media to manage your brand and promote your business, but using online tools designed to measure the effectiveness of your strategy. I provide a brief overview of tools including Klout.com, TweetReach.com and Twiangulate.com.

And finally, every week on UBR, you’ll get motivation and inspiration from author and entrepreneurial icon Farrah Gray, a weekly wrap-up of business news from USA Today business correspondent Charisse Jones, our Patient Investor Report from Ariel Investments and key economic intelligence for small business owners from our UBR economists Derrick Collins and Rasheed Carter.
