Q: Given that some days are busier and more frustrating than others, how do you stay focused and frazzle-free during these periods?

A: The best way to keep your cool when things really get hectic is by maintaining a certain level of composure all the time. Some people are imbued with a perpetual calmness that allows them to get through just about any situation, no matter how taxing it may be. If inner calm doesn’t come as naturally to you, consider the following:
- Don’t try to do it all. You’ll only wear yourself thin. Instead, pace yourself, delegate duties and allow others to pitch in. Don’t try to be a martyr. Do what you can handle realistically and no more.
- Pat yourself on the back. When you accomplish something-big or small-acknowledge it and congratulate yourself on how far you’ve come.
- Take time off. It’s important to regularly devote time to relaxation. After all, if you don’t take care of yourself, you’ll be too tired, stressed and run-down to take care of business.
- Meditate. Talk yourself into a positive frame of mind. For example, “I know today is going to be challenging, but I have what it takes to make it through.” When you focus on what you can do, you’ll be in a better position to do what you have to do, regardless of what may be thrown your way.
