Boyland, a nearly 35-year veteran of the automotive business, began his career as a first baseman for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boyland retired from baseball in 1983 and accepted a sales position at a dealership in Portland, Oregon. In 1985, Boyland acquired his first dealership when he and a partner bought a pre-existing Dodge dealership.
