BE Smart Hackathon 2015

At the inaugural Black Enterprise BE Smart Hackathon sponsored by Capital One, five teams of four students each representing five historically black colleges hacked their way into the future in the heart of Silicon Valley.

The charge? To develop a personal finance app for college students and young professionals. Teams from Howard University, Johnson C. Smith University, Morgan State University, Southern University, and Spelman College showed that they were up to the challenge. Judging criteria included the apps’ anticipated social impact, innovation, and timely completion, as well as each team’s presentation.

Kalimah Priforce, a 2014 White House Champion of Change and headmaster CEO of Oakland, California-based Qeyno Labs, also spoke to the teams about opportunities in technology.

Morgan State’s winning team—Benjamin Hall, Khir Henderson, Kevin Proctor, and Myles Wright-Walker—won the judges over with its predictive-thinking app designed to help college students avoid debt. Capital One provided each member of the winning team a $150 Amazon gift card and an all-expenses paid trip to Capital One headquarters to present the winning app to senior executives. AT&T provided LG G Pad 7.0 LTE tablets and Powerbeats2 Wireless headsets.
