For the most part, African American movers and shakers are also big risk-takers. According to the Executive Profile 1997 Summary Report, a study measuring the attitudes and practices of the nation’s highest-ranking African American corporate achievers, nearly half of the 100 respondents ranked risk-taking as the “most important” characteristic needed for an executive’s success. In the same study, 26% of black executives indicated that taking on a “high-risk project” helped them achieve a breakthrough in their career. Other success factors were “aligning with the right people” (17%) and “switching companies” (16%).
