Pizza anyone? If so, consider Reggio’s Pizza Inc., which just may be the world’s only African American manufacturer of frozen pizza. Last year, the company was selected as the “National Minority Retail Firm of the Year” by the United States Department of Commerce and the Minority Business Development Agency. The Minority Business Report and the Small Business Development Council also selected Reggio’s Pizza as one of the “Ten Most Outstanding Minority Businesses of the Year 2000.” According to the firm’s President and CEO John M. Clark Jr., pictured above receiving the award from MBDA National Director Ronald N. Langston (left), Reggio’s sales were $15 million last year.

Will it be another slam dunk for Michael Jordan? Maybe. Jordan, a magazine produced by a joint effort between Hearst Magazines and Nike, premiered at the NBA All-Star Game in Philadelphia and hit the stands in February. Another issue is scheduled for July. The publication targets young men age 16 to 21, and features articles on urban culture, music, fashion, and sports. Four issues are planned for 2003.

Last October, Perry Watson III became the first African American in Indiana to own a Lexus dealership, beating out 12 other candidates. “Lexus owners had to drive more than 150 miles just for servicing. This dealership adds good competition in the market and gives customers more choices,” explains Watson, who also owns Brookfield Dodge in Minneapolis. His new dealership is already experiencing some early success. “In our first month of operation, we outsold the competition,” he says.

General Motors sold Lillie B. Biagas five General Motors franchises, making her the first African American female dealer to achieve such a feat. Last December, Biagas became president of Fairway Automotive Group Inc. in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania — consisting of Oldsmobile, Cadillac, Buick, GMC, and Pontiac — after graduating from the NADA Dealer academy. Biagas’ zeal for the auto industry is a response to the passing of her husband, Ed Biagas Sr., who was a General Motors dealer for 15 years.
