Working with purpose - Black Enterprise
Black Enterprise Magazine July/August 2018 Issue

I joined Bell Communications Research Inc. (Bellcore) in 1986 as a computer engineer. Some seven years later, I received a performance evaluation that, in my mind, didn’t really reflect my true potential. To compound matters, I was feeling more and more that contributing to the company was doing little for my personal satisfaction. I decided it was time for a change.

I soon embarked on a three-year, soul-searching journey to find a more fulfilling professional life. Two books by Myles Munroe-Understanding Your Potential (Destiny, $10.95) and In Pursuit of Purpose (Destiny, $10.99)-became phenomenal sources of inspiration. They helped me to find my life’s purpose and, subsequently, a new career path.

In 1996, I founded DOC Communications Cos. Through radio, television and the written word, I now help others to find their purpose in life.

Once I learned why I do what I do, I stopped struggling internally. I now operate with a new framework: life isn’t just about making a living; it’s most fulfilling when you live for work of your own making.
