Bobby Womack Legacy: Top Music Stars He Influenced and Inspired

Legendary singer and songwriter Bobby Womack died today at age 70. The Rock & Roll Hall of Famer leaves behind an extensive music legacy having worked with, inspired and influenced many industry greats. Check out more on his legacy below:

THE ROLLING STONES: “It’s All Over Now,” written by Womack, was this legendary band’s first No. 1 U.K. hit. It would reportedly reap tremendous royalties for the singer.

JAMES BROWN …  ARETHA FRANKLIN… JIMI HENDRIX: Womack sang backup vocals early in his career for these stars and a little known artist at the time: Jimi Hendrix.

SAM COOKE: Womack and his brothers worked as Cooke’s band in the ’60s as the Valentinos, and were signed to his music label.

PATTI LABELLE: One of the albums during his period of career revival, “The Poem II” featured duets with this award-winning songstress.

SLY STONE: Womack helped produce and played guitar on this funk star’s critically acclaimed classic album “There’s A Riot Going On.”

K-CI HAILEY (formerly of Jodeci):

Womack’s “If You Think Your Lonely Now” was not only a hit for the singer, but was covered in 1994 by the Jodeci singer and featured on the soundtrack of black cinema classic, Jason’s Lyric. It was a smash for Hailey as well, outperforming Womack’s original and peaked to No. 17 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and 11 on Hot R&B Singles charts.

HIP HOP: RICK ROSS, BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY & 50 CENT: Hip-hop mogul 50 Cent also sampled Womack’s song for his hit single, “Wait Until Tonight.” Artist Rick Ross has also sampled Womack’s music, and collaborated with him for his upcoming “Maybach Music V”

album. Womack’s songs have been sampled by and tremendously influenced many in hip-hop, including Kanye West, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Juicy J, Kendrick Lamar, 9th Wonder, Jean Grae and Big K.R.I.T.

ROD STEWART… STEVIE WONDER…SNOOP DOGG: This iconic rocker’s hit “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” allegedly sampled Bobby Womack’s song “If You Want My Love (Put Something Down On It). The two also reportedly worked on a recent album called called “The Best is Yet to Come,” which also features collaborations with hip-hop star Snoop Dogg and music icon Stevie Wonder. Other collaborators on the album reportedly include pop singer Teena Marie and Ronnie Isley of the hit-making band The Isley Brothers.

CALVIN RICHARDSON: This singer-songwriter recorded a tribute album for Womack which coincided with Womack’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The album was nominated for a Grammy and reached No. 30 on the R&B chart.

KELLY ROWLAND: In her early days of testing solo waters, this Destiny’s Child star recorded a version of Womack’s hit “Daylight” with Travis McCoy of the Gym Class Heroes. It became a hit in the UK Singles Chart.
