R&B Divas: 7 Unforgettable Performances from the Black Enterprise Golf & Tennis Challenge

This year’s Black Enterprise Golf & Tennis Challenge, is set to be full of fun, leisure and sports Aug. 28-31, 2014, at PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Confirmed acts include Jeffrey Osborne, Bell Biv DeVoe, Chris Spencer, Nicki Carr, Anthony Anderson, the Doug Banks Radio Show and more, who will join hundreds of the nation’s top African American entrepreneurs, executives, and professionals at this must-attend event.

Through the years, the Golf & Tennis Challenge has boasted a who’s who of attendees and performers. Check out top moments from the R&B divas of year’s past, from Vesta to Patti LaBelle.

JENNIFER HOLLIDAY & ANGELA BOFILL

These two songstresses tore the house down with their 90s hit, “I’m on Your Side.” Holliday is a Tony Award-winning actress best known for belting out tear-jerking hits from Dreamgirls including “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” Bofill is an R&B and jazz singer best known for her critically acclaimed songs including “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter.”

VESTA WILLIAMS

A singer, songwriter, and radio host, Williams had six Top 10 hits on the Billboard R&B chart from the mid-’80s to the early ’90s. She’s best known for her hits “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” “Sweet Sweet Love,” “Special,” and signature song, “Congratulations.” She died Sept. 11, 2011 at 53.

CHRISSETTE MICHELE

This Grammy-winning artist has hits including “Be OK,” and “Epiphany,”

and is today part of the cast of TV One’s R&B Divas: LA. She has worked with hip-hop heavy-hitters including Jay Z, Rick Ross, and Nas, and has also written songs for television shows including Tyler Perry’s House of Payne.

 

HEATHER HEADLEY

This Trinidadian-American singer, songwriter and actress has won a Tony, a Grammy, and a Drama Desk Award, and is best known for being the original Nala in longstanding Broadway hit The Lion King. She released her first album in 2002, with soul radio mainstays including “He Is,” and “I Wish I Wasn’t,” and struck a hit on her second album with “In My Mind.”

PATTI LABELLE

A legend of R&B, soul and gospel, this veteran songstress is also an author

and actress with more than 50 years in the music and entertainment industries. She got her start with Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, and has since received Grammy awards, NAACP Image Award honors as well as many other accolades for her showstopping performances and philanthropy. She has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Apollo Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. She has also had bestselling nonfiction books and appeared on TV shows including Out all Night, A Different World, All of Us and Cosby. Most recently, she is slated to appear on TV’s American Horror Story: Freak Show.

REGINA BELL

A singer-songwriter and actress, Bell is most known for her Grammy award-winning duet with Peabo Bryson, “A Whole New World” which was a hit song for Disney’s 1992 animated feature film Aladdin

. She has had other R&B and soul hits including “Baby Come to Me,” and “Make It Like It Was.” Belle has appeared in concert with many music greats including Ray Charles, Paul Taylor, The Rippingtons, Gerald Albright, Will Downing, Maze, Frankie Beverly, Phil Perry, Al Jarreau, the Manhattans and Stephanie Mills.

CHERYL LYNN

This R&B and soul singer is best known for her 1978 disco hit, “Got to Be Real.” Her hit song was covered by Mary J. Blige and Will Smith, for the “Shark Tale” soundtrack.
