Slideshow: Hot-Selling Merchandise Fit for a ‘Princess’

When Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” opens nationwide today, many children will have already settled into bed in their Princess Tiana sheets or played princess with their Princess Tiana dolls. There has been overwhelming excitement for Disney’s first black princess, and merchandise — including fashion, Band-Aids, snow globes, and, of course, dolls — has been flying off the shelves.

“The historic release of the film has generated tremendous consumer excitement from fans eager to enjoy film-inspired dolls, plush, apparel, books, collectibles and a host of other products well in advance of the film,” said Mary Beech, vice president of franchise development.

The Magical Collection by Carol’s Daughter

One of three African American-owned companies that have created merchandise inspired by the film, the cosmetic and beauty products company created natural hair and bath products that gently clean, condition, and soothe little princesses.

Sterling Silver Collector’s Edition Jacket

For Princess Tiana fans with unlimited funds, Mychael Darwin Denim & Leather has created a sterling silver and Swarovski-crystal encrusted denim jacket for almost $1,000. For those on a more modest budget, African American designer Mychael Darwin also offers a denim and leather jacket for $125.

Princess Tiana Just One Kiss Doll

Sales of the doll are up by more than 150% and Disney expects it to be among one of the season’s hottest selling toys. The doll was also recently nominated as a 2009 Girls Toy of the Year.

From curtains, to sheet sets and comforters, the Tiana bedroom collection from Disney is another top-selling item in the Princess and Frog merchandise franchise.
