Young people are disappointed with the Democratic Party because it is not putting forward a vision that captures the imagination, according to Malika Sanders, president of the 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement, a Selma, Alabama-based organization that builds young African Americans into community leaders. Sanders says the GOP is not a viable option for African Americans, but observes that they have invariably offered a strong platform. “There are certain things that made sense to our parents that just don’t make sense to my generation. Being weak is one of them. The Democratic Party consistently comes off as weak,” says Sanders. And in politics, weakness equals defeat at the polls.
