Fashion Vet Weighs In On Blackface Editorial


 

Fashion industry vet Bethann Hardison found the controversy dealing with Numéro magazine’s editorial which featured a white model in dark bronze makeup a call to action.

The spread, called “African Queen,” received much criticism on news and fashion blogs. Users expressed disappointment that a black model was not cast in the editorial that seemed created for a model of black descent.

“You don’t use the terminology ‘African Queen,’” said Hardison. “It normally goes towards someone definitively of a certain color.”

Numero magazine and the photographer who shot the editorial have both apologized for the photos.
