Fitocracy, free

“We want our users to push themselves instead of just cheering on,” said Richard Wang, founder and owner of Fitocracy. The online game and social network combines role-playing game (RPG) elements and fitness tracking to drive and motivate users to shed the pounds. The network helps you track your progress through the points system. Users who level up will gain numerous points, unlock achievements and quests, and, ultimately, lose weight. Participants who do exceptionally well can be highlighted as a group leader among their fitness friends, and can opt-in to share their latest accomplishments with their Facebook and Twitter community. Available in the iTunes App Store, the app is compatible with various mobile devices: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad; requires iOS 4.0 or higher.

Squinting, eye strain, prescription changes and migraines. These are all common health issues among today's office professionals.

With about 14 million people ages 12 and older having visual impairment, eye health is one factor that can't be ignored or dismissed. The economic impact of major vision problems alone is telling--- at more than $51 billion, according to the CDC's Vision Health Initiative---causing "a substantial social and economic toll for millions of people including significant suffering, disability, loss of productivity, and diminished quality of life."

Maintaining proper eye care can ensure everyday living --- from home to work --- is that much more manageable. BlackEnterprise.com caught up with entrepreneur and optician Utenzi Miller-Johnson, of New Jersey-based Elegant Eyes, on how to improve and maintain good visual health. ---Janell Hazelwood

Well, it’s official. The new year is here. Like everything else in our rapid-fire world these days, with the flick of a switch (or drop of a big crystal ball in Times Square) all the anticipation, planning and counting down is suddenly over and then comes… the big let down. Because no matter how much we force feed it, bumper-sticker optimism and new resolutions, somehow, most new years just don’t feel all that new. In fact, chances are you dragged all your 2011 challenges into 2012. Doing more with less on the job? Check. Trying to still get a job? Check. Relationship stresses? Check. Wish you were in a relationship? Check. Owed too much money? Check. Feeling overwhelmed, underappreciated and out of whack? Check, check, and check! Let’s be real. The first step in prevention is getting informed about a disease that’s expected to cost the nation approximately $800 billion a year by 2030, according to the American Heart Association. Rhonda Medows, MD, chief medical officer and executive vice president of United Healthcare’s government programs shares her heart healthy tips with BlackEnterprise.com. Dr. Medows breaks down her "Dress for Success" formula and how it equals a longer, robust life.
