Historic Black Enterprise Magazine Covers: Bob Johnson, May, 1992


BET Holdings, parent company of Black Entertainment Television, raises $72.3 million in an initial public offering, making it the first black-owned company controlled by African Americans on the New York Stock Exchange.

Johnson eventually takes the company in 1998 before selling it for $3 billion four years later to media giant Viacom, making him the first African American billionaire.
