CBC to Honor Phylicia Rashad, Bill Withers and Alvin Poussaint

This year, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Inc. (CBCF) and its Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) spouses will honor three African American icons whose contributions to the world of fine arts has left a lasting impact on the industry.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, during CBCF Celebration of Leadership in the Fine Arts, legendary actress Phylicia Rashad, singer/songwriter Bill Withers and author Dr. Alvin Poussaint will be honored at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

“Any discussion about African-American history and culture must include African-American artists,” president and CEO of CBCF, A. Shuanise Washington, said in a press release. “Through the Celebration of Leadership in the Fine Arts, the CBCF and the CBC Spouses pay homage to those whose creative bodies of work convey the rich and diverse African-American experience. CBCF is proud to support the next generation of great artists with scholarships to pursue their education and hone their crafts.”

This year’s Celebration of Leadership in Fine Arts will mark its 18th year, with scholarship money being raised for students pursuing studies in visual and performing arts. Past icons who’ve been honored at this event include B.B. King, Quincy Jones, Tyler Perry, Alice Walker and more.
