Communication Technologies Inc. (COMTek) CEO Joseph Fergus left a thriving career at AT&T Bell Laboratories to create the telecommunications company in 1990. More than 19 years later, COMTek is one of the nation’s largest black-owned companies and an industry leader in information technology.

The Chantilly-based company specializes in information security, enterprise network operations, maintenance, and training support. The IT firm is also the first company in the nation to commercially arrange Broadband Over Powerlines (BPL) technology on a citywide basis.

Clients include, the City of Manassas, Virginia, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, the U.S. Dept. of State, and the University of Virgin Islands, among others.  In 2008, the company had $82 million in revenues—up 24.5% from last year.
