What are you looking for in a student?
Tennessee State University is looking for academically talented, well-rounded, gifted students that are willing to receive quality instruction through academic programs which are broadly comprehensive at the baccalaureate and masters levels.
What unique, university-sponsored opportunities and services abound for students of color at Tennessee State University?
Tennessee State University remains committed to the education of a non-racially identifiable student body and promotes diversity and access without regard to race, gender, religion, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status. Scholarships are available for under-represented populations in various counties within the state of Tennessee.
What advice do you have for an applicant?
Be prepared. Make sure you are prepared academically. Research your desired major and see what career paths you can take. Then plan. Make sure you are mindful of deadlines in areas such as admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and housing. Forward all official documents–high school transcript and test scores. Take challenging courses and apply yourself. Be mindful of the university’s requirements, deadlines, and policies.
Do you have any advice for students needing housing at Tennessee State University? Is it difficult for freshmen/sophomores to get housing?
Since housing is based upon a student being admitted into the university, we encourage students to apply for admission before the July 1 deadline. The earlier a student applies, the earlier they can receive an admissions decision and apply for housing, which also increases the probability of being assigned the desired roommate.
What advice do you have for students who might fall short of minimum requirements, but still want to attend?
We encourage students to enroll into accredited, area community colleges or other colleges/universities where they can complete any academic deficiencies and improve their grade point averages. Doing so will enable the applicant to transfer to Tennessee State University with a 2.0 GPA in all attempted courses.
What kind of opportunities does Tennessee State have for non-traditional students?
We have online programs, tutoring and counseling services, orientation programs designed specifically for the adult students.
