Justice Bernette Johnson is at the center of a legal battle over whether she will be the next chief justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Louisiana’s Supreme Court ruled yesterday that Bernette Johnson will become the state’s first African American Chief Justice.

According to reports, the Supreme Court ruled unanimously that Johnson’s seniority and elected service on the high court gave her the right to succeed current Chief Justice Catherine “Kitty” Kimball next year.

Justice Jeffrey Victory argued that he should be appointed to the position because Johnson’s appointed years should not have counted towards the placement in the position.
