On Sept. 27, Ibom LLC, in partnership with The City College of New York (CCNY), and Mayven PR, hosted a Social Media Week event, “You, Your Brand and Social Media: How To Maximize the Relationship.”Janel Martinez, Black Enterprise tech editor, (left) moderated the panel which included media, technology and law professionals who gave tips and insight on how to best maximize the platform for professional and business branding and best practices for companies and employees.
Panelists included Black Enterprise associate producer, Janell Hazelwood, who talked about pitching and finding clients and partners via social media and how best to engage your audience as well as those who can bring you media exposure. She urged attendees to truly strategize how they can create their platform and “voice” to become leaders in their industries.
Ony Nwaohuocha, principal counsel at Ony Law, talked about the legal aspects of utilizing social media, urging business owners to have a best practices manual for employees and entrepreneurs to do their due diligence when using social media to conduct business.
China Muoka, technology entrepreneur and CEO of JobClickr and RentIsh, gave attendees tips on search engine optimization (SEO) and talked about the importance of your brand’s searchability. It’s important you know what’s on the Web about you, your company or your brand and how you can control that, he said.
Jerryanne Heath Chiume, founder of ConceptLink, a social impact strategy firm, urged audience members to get into the awesome capibilities of data analytics and knowledge. If you know where, when and how your audience is viewing or consuming your brand, you have your hand on the pulse of how you can advance and make profits.
Attendees included students, entrepreneurs and professionals from the New York-Tri-state area.
Anie Akpe-Lewis, founder of Ibom LLC, reminded the audience to continue the interactive aspects of the night by sharing their insights via social media using the event hashtag. Panelists talked about how entrepreneurs and nonprofits can use hashtags to spread the word about their endeavors and gain support, funding as well as consumers.
Mary Olushoga, founder of The AWP Network, introduced the issue of staying authentic to what you and your brand represents, asking how to discern when your thoughts and insights on social media are damaging to your brand. Panelists urged attendees to use discretion and think of their purpose for using each platform, whether for personal or professional reasons.
A filmmaker and photographer wanted to know how he could best manage his diversity of skills and talents using social media. Panelists encouraged him to hone in on how those talents are related and how he can best apply those skills and services in one or two industries.
