Anybody who has experienced the dating game knows the ups and downs of the process. Believe it or not, looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right isn’t too different from searching for a job. Here are some classic dating rules that you can apply to job seeking to help you land a winning gig:

Dating rule #1: Get with the woo. In the dating world, first impressions are everything, and the same goes for the first interview. It’s important to look and act the part, complete with a firm handshake and a warm smile. However, don’t let your looks do all the talking. Interviews, like first dates, can be overwhelmingly nerve-wracking, so don’t forget to be confident. We all know that average-looking guy who ended up with the university’s homecoming queen because he oozed confidence and swagger. Having enthusiasm and maintaining eye contact will show that you’re interested, engaged and self-assured.

Dating rule #2: Get your sexy back: Whether you’re digging a potential beau all depends on the chemistry between you two. To ensure that you will be a great fit for a job, you’ll need to have professional chemistry with your prospective employer and be passionate about your work. Remember to follow your gut. If it doesn’t feel like it’s going anywhere, then it probably isn’t. Job seeking is a two-way street: You’re looking for an awesome opportunity and they’re looking for an awesome worker.

Dating rule #3: Don’t bad-mouth your ex. Bashing your ex on a date is always a big no-no. While you’re busy insulting your ex, your date will silently wonder if you’re bitter or harboring old, negative feelings. Similarly, bad-mouthing a former employer can cast you in a negative light and give your interviewer pause. Find a way to put a positive spin on it, and focus on what you learned from those experiences.
