What You Need to Know About the Tinder-Like Job App that Quickly Connects You to Employers

Connecting job seekers with employers just got simpler thanks to the Tinder-like job app nspHire.

Working similar to online dating, the app, which was launched in October 2014, allows candidates to swipe left or right depending on their interest in a position. From there, an employer will receive a push notification with the applicants profile attached. If there is interest, they will swipe right and a match will be made.

“We are trying to solve two of the most frustrating aspects of looking for a job,” nspHire co-founder and chief marketing officer Rasheen Carbin tells BlackEnterprise.com. “As a job seeker when you apply on job boards you have no idea what happens. You submit and get an automatic e-mail saying ‘Thanks for applying,’ but you likely don’t hear back and you don’t know if the employer even saw your résumé.”

For employers, Carbin says posting to sites such as Career Builder and Monster brings in several hundred candidates, when the employer actually only has time to look at 10.

“So we thought if we use the Tinder interface we would be connecting only the most interested candidates with employers and hopefully make the process more efficient,” adds Carbin.

A graduate of Georgetown University, Carbin’s initial idea to connect job seekers with employers came in 2012 with the help of his business partner and classmate Dan Mullaney. The duo launched a startup called MBA Project Search, which connected M.B.A. students with consulting opportunities. However, after facing difficulty with getting enough projects to match the demand of M.B.A. students in need of work, Carbin and Mullaney’s business eventually folded and they went back to the drawing board on ideas.

“One of the biggest lessons we learned was that speed was really important in helping people to find jobs. We found that no matter how many qualified people an employer was matched with, they only looked at the first few people we sent them,” said Carbin. “We found if we could eliminate a layer and make the connection quicker we could eliminate [problems] on both sides.”

In 2014, Carbin and Mullaney put their personal funds together to officially launch the NspHire app, with their third business partner Darryl Glover. In 2015, the company expanded to also include a website that can be used by both job seekers and employers.

Now, with less than two years under its belt, nspHire has more than 10,000 job seekers and access to more than 2 million jobs, which Carbin says can be credited to their active presence on social media.
