After months of beta testing, Facebook made their new Timeline layout available to the public today. Previously, only a select few users were able to upgrade to Facebook Timeline, which is a total redesign of the look, feel and interactivity of the social media platform. But what exactly makes Facebook Timeline different from all of the previous changes? For starters, it shifts the focus from merely in-the-moment status updates to a detailed overview of a user's entire life, raising the level of interconnectivity between users.
As with any Facebook upgrade there are critics, who are concerned about privacy issues and the potential for identity theft. However, Facebook is providing users with a seven-day grace period to review and edit all their Timeline-accessible information. Click here to “get Timeline” now, but remember you’ll only have seven days to review your page before it goes live to "friends". To help users adjust to the changes, Mashable listed 10 things you need to know about Facebook Timeline.

Facebook Timeline Launches: 10 Things You Need to Know Now

Before you switch over to the new Facebook layout, here are a few things you need to know

November 13, 2011 was a historical day for Blacks in tech as CNN's Black In America 4: The New Promised Land: Silicon Valley aired. The documentary followed eight entrepreneurs from around the country who relocated to Silicon Valley in the summer to launch their Web tech start-ups as part of the NewME Accelerator Program.
The documentary alone will not create a 100% meritocracy in Silicon Valley but has sparked discussion that didn't exist about Black Web tech start-ups. Kloudco founder Hank Williams did an interesting analyst in his "Tech Industry Silence is Deafening on #BlackInAmerica" post. Only three people from Rob Schoble's Influential Tech Industry list joined the discussion. With #BlackInAmerica being a trending topic the night of the doc’s premier, it’s not likely these tech savvy people missed it. As a note, popular start-up publication, TechCrunch, which routinely reports on the demo days and does extensive profiles of the other accelerator participants, didn't mention it at all. In response, here’s my 5-point recap. —Hajj Flemings

Do you want to become the next Seth Godin, Steve Jobs or Daymond John? First you’ll need some pointers to help establish yourself as a thought leader in the era of digital technology. One disclaimer: having a blog does not make you a thought leader just like having an iPhone will not make you think like Steve Jobs.
In the end thought leadership has the ability to translate into revenue in the Web 2.0 world for infopreneurs (entrepreneurs who generate their revenue by creating content). The typical streams of income for thought leaders/infopreneurs come from creating products and creating experiences, like writing books, speaking at conferences/events, and creating other content products. Following Black Enterprise’s 20/20 Vision: Job Creation & Career Opportunities in The Next Economy with Wal-Mart in Los Angeles, CA earlier this week, this article will help individuals understand how to use digital technology, content curation and branding as a thought leadership strategy. —Hajj Flemings

Despite being just 24, DJ Tay James has accomplished a lot in his field. In addition to being Justin Bieber’s tour DJ, he’s been the go-to-jock for events like the 2010 White House Easter Egg Roll and the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. He still finds time to offer his services to those interested in pursuing a career as a DJ with one-on-one lessons he provides during his downtime.
Although he honed his skills via the traditional method of two turntables, a mic, a mixer, headphones and a few speakers, James is no stranger to the digital age. There’s no way any DJ worth his or her weight in vinyl could ignore the advent of CDJs and the revolutionary Serato. While the advancement of technology is scary to most DJs in the industry nowadays, James couples it with the traditional to use it to his advantage. So aside from headphones and speakers, what tops James’ must-have list of gadgets and apps for the digital age DJ? BlackEnterprise.com picked the hi-tech jock’s brain for the answers. —Amy Andrieux

Classes from 9am to 3pm, your organizations’ meetings scheduled right after, and you’re trying to sneak a bite to eat in between. Oh, and of course you can’t forget Facebook/YouTube/Twitter/Tumblr-time. Are you wondering what time that leaves for homework and studying?

Welcome to the life of today’s college student. A study released last year by Philip Babcock and Mindy Marks, professors from the University of California, discovered the amount of time the average college student at a four-year college spends studying has declined by 42% since 1961, which narrows work outside of the classroom down to approximately 14 hours per week. With students spending less time hitting the books, they have to maximize whatever time is available for studying and completing assignment. With constant advances in technology, educators and students have to find the right tools to keep lectures interesting and engagement at an all time high. Let’s face it: the classroom, library, and study centers are no longer just for books—add laptops, iPods, tablets, and e-book readers to the list of must-have gadgets students are toting around campus. In fact, most colleges and universities are meeting students where they’re at, providing pupils with work accessible only on interactive platforms, such as the growingly popular podcasts, which are being used to elaborate on homework assignments, share lecture notes and access additional class materials. As part of our Back to School coverage, BlackEnterprise.com suggests students check out these five podcasts that will boost their academic prowess. —Janel Martinez

With more than 48 million iPad’s projected to be sold in 2011—largely due to mobile workers—we’ll start to see an increase in the way people use the device for business. The simple fact is workers are spending more time executing tasks remotely and accessing email from mobile devices (of this market segment 32% of employees rely on multiple mobile devices to complete their work). Providing portability and functionality, the iPad is quickly trumping the laptop as the meeting-ready mobile device of choice. Here are six reasons why, along with a few accompanying apps. —Hajj Flemings

Are paper business cards extinct? As I travel to various interactive conferences I find there are more digital transfers of contact information than business cards changing hands. With the introduction of smartphones and tablets into the work environment, people have the ability to share their contact information digitally in real-time so the idea of a physical card may be a thing of the past for some. One of the major problems with traditional business cards is that we have a pile of them; we can never find the one we need when we need it and our pertinent business contacts need to be stored digitally. There are a host of technologies that can equip users to store contacts digitally that can be accessed from any mobile device at anytime and integrates a social layer to business networking and provides the context of the interaction. Still, I would argue that there is still value in paper business cards so don’t throw your cards away, yet. But here are five digital tools that can help you make the transition smoothly. —Hajj Flemings

Privacy continues to be one of the top issues in sharing content on social networks. Recently, Facebook announced their new privacy settings and the redesign they are rolling out soon. Users started seeing the new privacy changes to the Web version Thursday, and the mobile roll-out of changes will happen soon after. An interesting question is what is driving the new Facebook privacy changes? Is it Google Plus or the need to provide users with a more contextual experience? The launch of Google Plus has intensified content-sharing privacy with their Google Circles functionality. The friendly competition with Google will hopefully continue to provide changes that will benefit the user. The other big plus is that these adjustments enable users to manage their profiles, which represent and reflect a portion of their online identity. ---Hajj Flemings

Huffington Post recently put together an impressive list of Women in Tech You Need to Follow on Twitter, showcasing some of the most dynamic women on the Web. We applaud their accomplishments and the doors they have opened for women. Unfortunately, of the 27 women listed, only two—Jenny Deluxe and Ory Okolloh—were Black digerati. The reality is there are many exceptionally remarkable Black women advancing technology and forming networks where women of all races can be mentored to become digital media iconoclasts. Noticing the oversight, BlackEnterprise.com compiled our own list of Black Women in Tech You Need to Follow on Twitter, including social media and technology influencers who push digital technology and new media daily on their blogs and various platforms. This list is by no means all-encompassing, but a step in giving credit where credit is rightfully due. —Marcia Wade Talbert

Give the People What They Want Not What You Want “[If] you go to GM and say, ‘What kind of car are you building?’ they’ll say, ‘We’re building a car that people want.’ But somehow you come to media and they say, ‘Oh, we’re not giving people what they want; the people are a bunch of idiots. How dare they ask for what they want?’ How could you possibly run an industry that’s motto is ‘We’re not giving the people what they want’? You have to look at [blogging] like any other business in which you want to be successful and profitable,” says Mwangaguhunga. “That means I’m going to look at my customers, find out what they want, find out what they like about this company and give them more of that. I’m also going to find out what they don’t like about this company and I’m going to give them less of that.”

Twitter is a power platform for business users and entrepreneurs to humanize their brand and communicate their message directly with their audience. To fully optimize it as a business tool, though, you’ll have to use third party applications and other online tools. This is especially true for users who have to manage multiple Twitter accounts and conversations. Third party apps and tools provide users a richer Twitter experience and enable deeper engagement with their followers. Currently, 58% of published tweets come from official Twitter apps, while the remaining 42% come from third-party apps. That’s a lot of apps and with so many options available, it’s hard to know where to start. Well, here are 10 essential Twitter tools to get the most out of your social media experience. —Hajj E. It’s a great communication channel that can be used to build brand awareness and provide direct contact with consumers and contacts. The question any smart business owner in the 21st century has to ask is this, “Does my Twitter presence reflect my brand?” For some the response may be a simple yes or no, but to truly answer the question you have to first determine what type of account fits your needs: personal branded, business branded or a combination of the two. Some only know Stanley "MC Hammer" Burrell for his Grammy award-winning legacy as a pioneering performer in hip-hop and pop culture. Others remember him more for his infamous financial woes and stints on reality TV. But don't put this entrepreneur and social media advocate in a box. He's kept the superstar momentum going in recent years with his dance community Web portal, DanceJam, and the founding of Alchemist Management, a mixed martial arts management company. Hammer's also reinvented himself as a social networking mogul (with more than 2 million Twitter followers), carving out yet another niche in his diverse career with high impact and visibility. An avid reader and sought-after speaker—having lectured at Oxford and Wharton and will be speaking this year at Black Enterprise's Entrepreneurs Conference in Atlanta (May 22-25), Hammer knows a thing or two about expanding one's knowledge of how to connect with audiences and use technology as a lucrative tool. BlackEnterprise.com caught up with the social media whiz on his favorite book picks for social media success.
