Black Fraternities and Sororities Petition Against Mona Scott-Young’s Latest Project

It’s no secret that Mona Scott-Young’s career transition from artist management to reality television powerhouse has sparked much criticism. Her popular “Love and Hip-Hop” series serves as a guilty pleasure for many black viewers and a worst nightmare for others. But her latest attempt at displaying black culture to the masses is one that many believe is one step too far.

In an attempt to give an inside view of the lives of members of Black Greek letter organizations, Scott-Young’s Monami Entertainment company is working to push for a new reality series called “Sorority Sisters.” But the show’s production has not come without lots of backlash after a trailer surfaced that many feel was a misrepresentation of members from Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho. Even though the trailer has quickly been removed, members of the historic and prestigious organizations are continuing the fight to ensure that there is no chance of the show coming into fruition.

A MoveOn.org petition, started by Reynoir Lewis, has already garnered over 28,000 signatures in an attempt to ban the show from happening, stating:

“Stop the spread of ignorance and stereotyping of our beloved Black Greek letter organizations. Our founders amongst EVERY organization worked extremely hard to allow us to unite and flourish not only on college campuses, but as a people well beyond our college days, and Mona Scott-Young now threatens to demolish those aims and goals we all abide by.”

Looks like Scott-Young’s latest project is where black viewers draw the line on reality show drama.
