According to TV Guide, ESPN has suspended Stephen A. Smith due to his comments on domestic abuse. On a showing of ESPN’s “First Take” last week, Smith gave an opinion that Ray Rice’s wife, Janay Palmer, could have prevented the attack from her then-boyfriend, Ray Rice. The discussion was met with widespread criticism, especially on social media.

“What I’ve tried to employ [with] the female members of my family—some of who you all met and talked to and what have you — is that … let’s make sure we don’t do anything to provoke wrong actions, because if I come — or somebody else comes, whether it’s law enforcement officials, your brother or the fellas that you know — if we come after somebody has put their hands on you, it doesn’t negate the fact that they already put their hands on you,” he said.

He did apologize with this statement, “On Friday, speaking right here on ‘First Take’ on the subject of domestic violence, I made what can only amount to the most egregious error of my career,” Smith said. “My words came across that it is somehow a woman’s fault. This was not my intent. It is not what I was trying to say.”

He’s suspended by ESPN until Aug. 6.

I really don’t understand why this man was suspended in the first place. I must go back and see if they’re is any additional information that was verbalized that isn’t here! If i have to go on the quote above I truly don’t see the offense. His intent, in my opinion is clearly expressed! To caution someone to not provoke a certain action isnt necessarily the same as saying they did and better yet it doesn’t imlply that they deserved it! It’s really baffling to me how you can take one word and/or sentence out of context and fixate on it. Context matters, and in this case context should have prevailed. What is the point in providing commentary, or having an opinion when people can pick apart what you said based on an out of context word or phrase. I would be able to understand if the context wasn’t there but for the life of me i don’t get it. Its as if people listen but don’t comprehen! When a trigger word stands the hair on your back up be sure to exercise discipline by listening, and analyzing the entire context. For some reason the trigger word or phrase brings everything to a complete halt and I really think people don’t hear anything further and this is true whether it’s in writing or speech. Sad so sad and shame on these businesses for having to dumb themselves down. Yes, I said it dumb yourself down maybe you should make people look, read, and listen again. I was taught this is how you learn but no you just keep reacting to people’s emotions, or lack of knowledge and understanding- that is power misused!
