Would You Use a Coupon on a Date?

There's a fine line between a smart move and poor taste.

One of my colleagues brought up the topic of couponing and how an increasing number of consumers are joining the movement. Then I began to think to myself: Is there coupon etiquette? Are there times when you should and shouldn’t use a coupon? What about a date? If your honey pulls out a coupon book on your first date, does that demonstrate financial savvy or is it just plain tacky? I’ll admit that if my husband whipped out a coupon on our first date or insisted that we only go to restaurants that he had a coupon for, I doubt there would have been a second date. Personally, it would make me feel like he didn’t think I was worth the money. That first impression counts.

I’m of the mind set of it’s I can get a deal, I’m using all I can get – especially in this day in age.

I’ll even pull out my AMC stubs card even if he’s paying.

Now if he pulled out a coupon, dressed in a killer suit and looking rich, I would actually be impressed and my attraction for him would not waiver.

Absolutely. It should be about the experience and creativity of the date, not about how much money is spent (especially in these economic times). For example, what if I used a Groupon discount to take my date on a helicopter tour of the city, or on a harbor cruise, or some other experience that she might not have had before, would I still be a schmuck for not paying full price? If so, I wouldn’t care to date the person anyway, so it’s a moot point.

Hells yeah! If you’re not hip to Groupon or Living Social then you’re missing out. This past weekend Groupon offered $20 helicopter rides over Monterey Bay.

I have always used coupons. And not to be cheap. I use them to max my spending. The trick, if you want to use a coupon on a first date is to let the waiter know before the bill, so it will already be with the check and your date would not be the wiser.
