Chicago School Restructuring Misplaces African American Students


Earlier this school year, the Chicago school system faced a teachers strike that left thousands of students out of school for weeks. Now, the Chicago school district announced that they will be closing more than 50 schools this year leaving 1,000 of those teachers unsure about their fates. Aside from the teachers, those who will be most heavily affected are the students that will be misplaced.

The shutdown will affect more than 30,000 students from kindergarten to the eighth grade in the cities south and west side’s. 90% of the students in these areas are African American leading many to believe that it is a race issue. The CEO of the Chicago Public Schools claims that it is an issue of capacity and nothing else.
