Dolce & Gabbana Earrings Stirs Racial Controversy

While fashion may be an artistic form of expression, some new fashion items by popular brand Dolce & Gabbana is drawing on racial symbolism that has become a red flag to some. During its Spring 2013 runway presentation, Dolce & Gabbana unveiled its ‘Blackamoor’ earrings, which depicts the likeness of an African woman’s head.

The earrings harken back to a time in slavery when African women were viewed as pawns and accessories to white colonials. While the entire collection resembles the styles reflected in African tribes, it is the earrings and depictions of African women on the clothing’s prints that has spawned judgment in the fashion realm. More notably, no black models were used in show’s line up.
