Wisconsin Jails More Black Men Than Any State in USA


A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee uncovered the amount of black men incarcerated in the state’s prison system is almost 7% higher than the national average. The national average is 6.7%. Wisconsin outdistances the closest state to their record by the 3 percentage points.

The majority of the men incarcerated come from Milwaukee, which is Wisconsin’s biggest city. Many of those who were incarcerated and released are between the ages of 30 – 40. This fact could be an attributing factor to Milawaukee’s high poverty rate. It also shows the biggest income gap between whites and blacks.
