Backed By the Tech Community

With promises of tax breaks and a laissez-faire approach to regulation, many in the tech community favor Romney. In a recent poll, 64% of chief executives, CFOs and other company officers at tech companies as well as venture capitalists, tech entrepreneurs and consultants felt a Romney administration would be more prosperous to their industry.

Well-known venture capitalist and Facebook investor Marc Andreessen has contributed more than $100,000 to the Romney campaign. He’s also been victorious in tapping Silicon Valley heavyweights for super PACs. We’re talking key tech backers such as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Meg Whitman; Howard Cox, advisory partner at the venture capital firm Greylock Partners; and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel, who gave over $4 million to conservative super PACs this year.

Hundreds applied to the FOCUS100 Pitch-It Competition, but only four made the cut. These four promising start-ups founded/co-founded by black women proved to be the main attraction, not only because of their live products, but because of their experience, education, passion, and business acumen under pressure. All of the winners received coaching sessions with Jeanne Sullivan of Starvest Partners and Lauren Maillan Bias of Gen Y Capital. But only one stood victorious. The winner walked away with:

- Finalist status for TechStars NYC 2013 session

- A Non-Pitch Meeting with Andreessen Horowitz, and

- A Meeting with Comcast Ventures.

Can you guess who won?

A Lifelong History: It used to be acceptable to chronologically list every job you ever had on your resume. However, today’s hiring managers are more concerned about the relevance of your experience rather than the length of your experience. For an experienced professional, listing your first job out of high school isn’t really necessary unless it’s the only job you’ve ever had. While 10 years of work history is the standard, it’s okay to list older experience if it is relevant.

The one thing many of these women had in common was the passion and drive to create their own dream, and become employers in today’s high-growth innovation economy. I’ve been involved in the Republican Party for most of my adult life and continue to be amazed at the lack of interest the party shows toward the Black community. Those who have followed my writings over the years know that I have been extremely critical of the party regarding this issue. But, I have been even more critical of the individuals the party chooses to showcase as the face of Black Republicans. I find many of these individuals to be an embarrassment to me as a person of color, as well as to the Republican brand. Many of the Black faces that are trotted out in front of the cameras have absolutely no connection to the Black community.

Despite public perception there are Black Republicans who possess both political and policy expertise that the party could and should tap in to. They exemplify the best of Republican values and thoroughly understand the need for the party to be more diverse. Here are some influential Black Republicans that most folks have never heard of but should. —Raynard Jackson

The social media analytics company Klout announced on Tuesday they were rolling out a new scoring system, ditching the former 100-variables rating system and replacing it with one containing over 400 metrics, according to Mashable. The San Francisco-based tech company stirred up some controversy with their old scoring system, which many argued didn’t measure one’s “true influence.” (Case in point, Justin Bieber’s score trumping that of President Barack Obama’s until the recent change.) Now, Klout looks at over 12 billion bits of data each day across the seven social networking sites it looks at, which is 12 times greater than previously analyzed. With the new algorithm measuring real-world influence and the unveiling of “Klout Moments,” Mashable details what you need to know about the changes:

Try renting instead of buying. “The easiest way to save big when students head back to school is by renting textbooks through a program like Rent-A-Text,” suggests Ellie Kay, author of The Little Book of Big Savings. Sites like BookRenter.com, CollegeBookRenter.com and Rent-a-Text.com have been popping up ever since Congress added some textbook-affordability provisions to the Higher Education Opportunity Act in 2008. These websites allow you to rent a book for a flat fee and then return it at the end of your semester, save you anywhere from 50% to 80% off the costs.

Fitocracy, free

“We want our users to push themselves instead of just cheering on,” said Richard Wang, founder and owner of Fitocracy. The online game and social network combines role-playing game (RPG) elements and fitness tracking to drive and motivate users to shed the pounds. The network helps you track your progress through the points system. Users who level up will gain numerous points, unlock achievements and quests, and, ultimately, lose weight. Participants who do exceptionally well can be highlighted as a group leader among their fitness friends, and can opt-in to share their latest accomplishments with their Facebook and Twitter community. Available in the iTunes App Store, the app is compatible with various mobile devices: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad; requires iOS 4.0 or higher.

RAISE ENOUGH MONEY BEFORE OPENING FOR BUSINESS

Redding opened up Amy Ruth’s in 1998 with a $73,000 investment and it went on to become a $3 million company. While that achievement is to be lauded, under further inspection it should also to be avoided because Redding launched his business undercapitalized, a trend that he believes is all too common for many African American-owned businesses. “As Black people we always end up opening businesses underfunded,” he notes. “Due to that we rob Peter to pay Paul and don’t pay taxes or purveyors or utilities. Redding knew that opening his latest restaurant would mean securing enough funding—$2 million to be exact. The only way he was able to achieve that round of fundraising was by revising his business plan, something that he recommends for every entrepreneur looking to start over. “You have to put your new business together with a solid business plan so that you can get proper funding.”

THE PRESENT IS ALL THAT MATTERS

Your Klout score is based on a rolling 90-day window. However, the most recent activity has more bearing on scoring than old activity. So, no matter how low your score is, what you do over the next week is all that matters in getting a higher score. Short-term lapses in social media presence also tend to have less of an effect, but beware of month-long drops. Your score will gradually decrease.

Tip: Keep in mind that the higher your Klout score, the more difficult it becomes to increase your score exponentially. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t blow past 80 in the next week, just keep working at it.

Harnessing the power of social for social good was a major trend and point of discussion among conscious techies and seasoned panelists during Social Media Week 2012. We’ve seen how quickly platforms can be used to mobilize reform efforts thanks to social media’s influence in the Arab Spring and recent Occupy Movement. Digital thought leaders have no doubt that, when used properly, social media can be a significant cultural unifier, connecting people and efforts despite location.
Moderated by Alice Korngold of Korngold Consulting LLC, "Social Media for Social Good"—an hour-long panel discussing best practices to use when furthering a cause in the digital space—wasn’t short of generating great ideas. I talk to stressed out business owners and non-profit leaders almost every day who are just plain overwhelmed with social media. Not because they don't know how to use it and not because they don't understand its value. They're stressed because the space changes at such a rapid pace---the ground is always shifting under their feet so they never really feel like they're gotten a foothold.

So what do you do to keep up with social media while running your business? It's impossible to get on every platform and more importantly, it's just not smart. You can't do that, so don't even try. Instead of focusing on quantity of social connections and sites, focus more on quality control. Here are 6 ways to do it.---Amanda Miller Littlejohn
