New product releases from Nike mean extremely long lines and, sometimes, full-blown riots. It hasn’t been confirmed whether or not the brand’s Twitter RSVP system is an attempt at preventing future cases of mayhem, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction. It will at least alleviate headaches (and stress) for store managers and consumers alike.
Nike’s newly-created reservation system invites sneaker enthusiasts to one of 12 participating Nike retail locations on Twitter. On an appointed RSVP date, each U.S. store will deploy a tweet at random with a product-specific hashtag to kick off the reservation process. Followers must then “DM”–direct message–the store account specific information including their shoe size (limit one), last 4 digits of their state, passport, military or school ID number, and the product-specific tag within 60 minutes. The location will then DM confirmations to those who have successfully secured sneakers. On launch day, the customer must pick up the shoe from a Nike store or face having their unclaimed pair returned to the system.
