Georgia politician Stacey Abrams has been widely celebrated as a voting rights activist and for her recent work increasing the number of registered voters in her home state. This week, she has something else to celebrate as she was revealed to be a nominee for the Nobel Peace Prize.
According to Reuters, Abrams was nominated in light of her impactful work during the 2020 election race as the organization likened her actions to other winners such as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Abrams’ work follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights,” said Socialist Party member of Norway’s parliament Lars Haltbrekken to Reuters about the nomination. “Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society.”
Other nominees include climate change activist Greta Thunberg, former White House adviser Jared Kushner, and Russian dissident Alexei Navalny. Recently, the organization recently shared the nomination letter for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, from 1963 on its Twitter page.
“The first Nobel Prize nomination for Martin Luther King Jr. arrived to the Norwegian Nobel Committee #OTD in 1963,” the tweet said. “The nomination came from a previous Peace Laureate, American Friends Service Committee. King was awarded the Peace Prize for his nonviolent campaign against racism.”
