Your company’s merger might not have the same splashy headlines as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg buying Instagram or the intense game of executive musical chairs being played by Arianna Huffington and the TechCrunch editors, but the impact of a company transition on your career is no less important. You could be faced with not only answering to a new boss, but an entirely different corporate environment.

Americans put a lot of value on job status. There are jobs that are revered for heroism—firefighters, soldiers—and others are heralded as the cornerstone of our society, such as educators. But the jobs that most admire with awe and envy are the “sexy jobs.” Positions that, from the outside looking in, appear to pay a pretty penny to live the life. They’re so appealing in fact that if you pay attention to any TV show or film there’s a good chance that one or all of the main characters have one of these “sexy jobs.” However, the luxurious lives associated with these gigs on screen don’t translate to real life, where oftentimes passion outweighs the paycheck. The news hit today that Sony Corp. is set to get rid of 10,000 workers in a major overhaul of the company, seeking to take it out of the red and into the black. Much of the employee scale-backs will come from Sony’s television business, according to reports, and roughly  half of the job cuts will stem from recent deals, including the company’s sale  of a chemicals company and the new joint operation with Hitachi and Toshiba.
