CAMAC Holdings Inc. was the second black-owned enterprise to gain membership into the BE 100s billion dollar club when it reached the No. 1 slot on our 2003 INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100. In fact, the Houston-based oil and gas exploration, consulting and engineering company was only a hair away from achieving the milestone when it made its debut on our industrial/service list in 2002 - - gross sales for 2001 were $979.5 million. Operated by Nigerian-born Kase Lawal, CAMAC (which stands for Cameroon-American) grew through its ability to integrate upstream services, the production of oil and gas, and downstream operations, which included trading and refining of its products. CAMAC, which reported its highest level of revenues-- $2.43 billion-- on the 2009 list, left the BE 100s in 2011 after shifts in operational structure, management and ownership.

Not only did BLACK ENTERPRISE select Harpo Inc. as the 2008 Industrial/Service Company of the Year but it was the first time that billionaire entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey spoke to the press in detail about her business empire. At the time, the dynamo was still developing Oprah Winfrey Network or OWN, asserting that divine inspiration, not strategic planning, drove her company’s success. She also admitted that it took a solid business team and sound financial controls to grow her entity from a five-person production company to a 430-employee multimedia conglomerate. Moreover, she owns every piece of her franchise: the content, name, brand and studio.

Travelers flock to the Caribbean for its beautiful beaches, good food and perfect weather but there’s one overlooked element that may be of wanderlust interest too---fashion. Burgeoning designers in the United States and Europe are able to showcase their work in popular fashion week showcases but Caribbean designers tend to get over looked, so that’s where St. Maarten’s inaugural 2014 Color Revolution comes in. It’s aimed at providing a platform for up and coming Caribbean designers who have the skills to be showcased on an international level, but also to encourage sartorial enthusiasts around the world to consider new travel destinations for shopping sprees and buying inventory.

Highlights from Color Revolution include Donna Dove’s convertible dress-shirt collection, Lisa Faye's tye-dye caftans and dresses, and Kaj’s breezy resort wear. Click through the gallery for more pieces from the Color Revolution collections. --Starrene Rhett Rocque

The competitiveness of corporate America requires inclusion at all levels---and that culture comes from the top. That’s why BLACK ENTERPRISE has developed our list of the Top Executives in Corporate Diversity.

This roster represents senior managers and C-suite executives charged with ensuring that major corporations have diverse representation across the board. We found top-ranked executives among the nation’s 250 largest publicly traded corporations whose primary responsibility is oversight and implementation of policies and programs that advance African Americans, Latinos, and other ethnic minorities as well as women, the disabled, and the LGBT (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender) population throughout their employee, senior management, and supplier ranks. They are also involved with expansive outreach to the diverse communities in which they serve.

Discover some of the executives we featured in our May 2014 issue who make diversity a business imperative.

"What I wanted to do was connect women of color globally to define the world on their terms," said Simone Bresi-Ando, far right, founder of I'mPOSSIBLE, whose career and motivation conversations started in the U.K. via Google Hangouts and events. Have you ever searched Google, stood in line to purchase the latest iPhone, bought products on Amazon.com or bought plane tickets through Priceline.com? Have you shopped at the Gap, Banana Republic, or Old Navy or made purchases at CVS using your Visa or MasterCard? Do you plan to watch the Sunday football game on Fox Sports? Well, none of these companies value your consumer dollars enough to have African Americans sit on their board of directors.
The browning of America hasn’t extended into the boardrooms of some of America’s largest publicly traded corporations—a number that benefit from black consumers to gain market share.

In our research to create the black enterprise Registry of Corporate Directors, our listing of black board members from the 250 largest companies on the S&P 500, we discovered that 75 companies—30% —currently do not have any blacks on their boards including quite a few household names. We did not include Dell, which included former Congressman and UNCF President and CEO William H. Gray as a board member until his death in early July. And at presstime, Sprint Nextel and Softbank were in the process of completing merger talks.

As we developed the following list, our editors reached out to the executive offices or investor relations departments of every company with a series of e-mails and phone calls to gain explanations for the absence of black representation as well as the lack of recruitment effort. We found that 58 of these companies, however, failed to provide us with any response.

*We incorrectly identified Edison International as one of our “75 Companies Without Black Board Members.” In fact, Peter J. Taylor, executive vice president and chief financial officer of the University of California (UC) system, is an African American and has served on the board of directors of Edison International since December 2011.

We reveal whether African Americans have made significant progress 50 years after the March on Washington

As thousands travel to the nation’s capital to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom , we continue to grapple with the question of whether African Americans collectively has made significant progress worthy of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s epic “I Have A Dream” Speech. It’s true African Americans no longer suffer the injustices of Jim Crow and that we have made significant political achievement – most notably, the election of America’s first African American president, Barack Obama, for two terms – but we still confront the nagging problems of poverty, unemployment and racism.

And the fact that such challenges continue to persist has never been more evident than the failure of a jury to hold George Zimmerman accountable for slaying Trayvon Martin as well as the Supreme Court’s decision in June to dismantle the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Revealing data compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau as well as information from the Pew Research center’s recent report on the economic, political and social status of African Americans, Black Enterprise – using the design talents of our Creative Director Terence Saulsby – provides a graphic snapshot of where we stand as a people today compared to that historic day in 1963. Have we realized the dream? You decide.

The differences between Black American then and now highlighted in our infographic.

The numbers show change, but is it enough?

With the last name Jones, there’s no question that success is literally right around the corner, at least that’s true in Hollywood. Quincy Jones is a multi-platinum record-winning producer, and has everything to show for it—including his family. While it may seem like a magic trick, as the Chicago-born legend spent much of his career traveling from country to country, he still made time to play father every now and then to his seven children—Jolie, Martina, Quincy III (QDIII), Kadida, Rashida, Rachel and Kenya.

All seven children didn’t walk behind their father into the walls of a recording studio, but they certainly found their way in and around Tinseltown. From super producer to super model, the Jones’ kids have pretty much done it all. And with their credits continually showing up on scores, albums, print ads and films, they’re not planning on stopping anytime soon. Leave it to this family, and they’ll be walking in space!

Diana Ross may have initiated the family name, but her children have surely continued its legacy. While the Motown best-selling artist entered the music world in the 1960’s with the Supremes—and later parted ways to embark on her solo career—her five children, Ross, Rhonda, Tracee, Chudney and Evan, have found multiple ways to continue the legend their mother started more than 50 years ago through the realms of television, film, fashion, education and more.

From Chudney and Rhonda’s top-tier collegiate education and choice careers to match to Evan and Tracee’s life on the big screen and Ross’s adventurous lifestyle celebrated through photography, the Ross coterie has found a way to expand their name’s reach and become a multi-arena conglomerate. When you’re a Ross, you know there ain’t no mountain high enough; now that’s a family business motto to live by.

With Beyoncé at the forefront, the Knowles family has found their way to the top of entertainment’s food chain. As the pop diva has found herself traveling around the world to perform sell-out shows, her father, Matthew Knowles, was helping make all that happen as her manager until 2011. While those two were on the the road, Bey’s mother, Tina, didn’t just sit home alone, she got to the drawing board and designed clothing for her House of Dereon and Miss Tina by Tina Knowles fashion lines. And you can’t forget about Solange! From the bigscreen to the runway, the girl who used to be known as Beyoncé’s little sister is now turning out parties in the U.S. and across the pond as she rocks the 1s and 2s and looked up to as a fashion know-all.

So if you ever thought a family business couldn’t exist, take a note or two from the Knowles’ clan. Now that’s love on top!

For grown women everywhere, Mr. Idris Elba revived that horrible habit of being attracted to bad boys. Elba’s role as the outrageously sexy corner/corner office guy, Stringer Bell, was memorable. Since his untimely departure from the show, Elba has been one busy man.

Besides DJing and rapping, he’s also gotten behind (well, and in front of) the camera to direct a Mumford and Sons video called “Lover of the Light.”

As far as acting, Elba has been in numerous movies including controversially (for some folks) playing in "Thor." Elba has won a Golden Globe for his title role in the detective series "Luther" and he was a fan favorite on "The Office."

Rumor has it that Elba may be the next James Bond on screen.

Alicia Keys & Swizz Beatz

With eight American Music Awards nominations and five wins; seven Billboard Music Awards nominations and 10 wins; and 13 Grammy Awards nominations and 14 wins, it’s no wonder Alicia Keys is sitting with a said net worth of $45 million. And with the recent launch of Keys’ partnership with Reebok for her own shoe line, there’s no telling what her worth will jump to next. But one thing is for sure, the New York-bred songbird’s now two-year-old son, Eygpt Daoud Dean, is living the life under the mandated communal support of his parents.

Three months before Eygpt was born, Keys married legendary producer Swizz Beatz, properly known as Kasseem Daoud Jones. The former Ruff Ryders producer has influenced the entertainment industry since the late ’90s, and now can proudly say he’s part of America’s one percent with an approximate net worth of $65 million. Combined Alicia and Swizz sit on a total worth of $110 million, which Eygpt can legally say—if he could speak in full sentences—he’s entitled to. This curly-haired cutie may not be the richest baby in America, but he’s certainly at the top of the list.

With 87 million women between the ages of 18 and 76 years old online, and another 69 million using social media on a weekly basis, according to BlogHer’s Social Media Matters study, it’s fair to say women run the world web. It’s one of the reasons social media influencer Ananda Leeke founded the Digital Sisterhood Network. The “Jill of Many Trades” (she’s a lawyer-turned-author, as well as an artist, coach, innerpreneur, yoga instructor, among other things) sparked a movement that consists of a national and international following; an entire month dedicated to women in social media, Digital Sisterhood Month, which takes place in December. There’s also a weekly celebration on Twitter and Facebook, entitled #DigitalSisterhood Wednesdays, geared toward shouting out your network and igniting meaningful conversation. As the organization’s designated month comes to a close, Digital Sisterhood announced the 2012 Digital Sisters of the Year.
