Not only did BLACK ENTERPRISE select Harpo Inc. as the 2008 Industrial/Service Company of the Year but it was the first time that billionaire entrepreneur Oprah Winfrey spoke to the press in detail about her business empire. At the time, the dynamo was still developing Oprah Winfrey Network or OWN, asserting that divine inspiration, not strategic planning, drove her company’s success. She also admitted that it took a solid business team and sound financial controls to grow her entity from a five-person production company to a 430-employee multimedia conglomerate. Moreover, she owns every piece of her franchise: the content, name, brand and studio.

CAMAC Holdings Inc. was the second black-owned enterprise to gain membership into the BE 100s billion dollar club when it reached the No. 1 slot on our 2003 INDUSTRIAL/SERVICE 100. In fact, the Houston-based oil and gas exploration, consulting and engineering company was only a hair away from achieving the milestone when it made its debut on our industrial/service list in 2002 - - gross sales for 2001 were $979.5 million. Operated by Nigerian-born Kase Lawal, CAMAC (which stands for Cameroon-American) grew through its ability to integrate upstream services, the production of oil and gas, and downstream operations, which included trading and refining of its products. CAMAC, which reported its highest level of revenues-- $2.43 billion-- on the 2009 list, left the BE 100s in 2011 after shifts in operational structure, management and ownership.

The competitiveness of corporate America requires inclusion at all levels---and that culture comes from the top. That’s why BLACK ENTERPRISE has developed our list of the Top Executives in Corporate Diversity.

This roster represents senior managers and C-suite executives charged with ensuring that major corporations have diverse representation across the board. We found top-ranked executives among the nation’s 250 largest publicly traded corporations whose primary responsibility is oversight and implementation of policies and programs that advance African Americans, Latinos, and other ethnic minorities as well as women, the disabled, and the LGBT (lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender) population throughout their employee, senior management, and supplier ranks. They are also involved with expansive outreach to the diverse communities in which they serve.
