Backed By the Tech Community

With promises of tax breaks and a laissez-faire approach to regulation, many in the tech community favor Romney. In a recent poll, 64% of chief executives, CFOs and other company officers at tech companies as well as venture capitalists, tech entrepreneurs and consultants felt a Romney administration would be more prosperous to their industry.

Well-known venture capitalist and Facebook investor Marc Andreessen has contributed more than $100,000 to the Romney campaign. He’s also been victorious in tapping Silicon Valley heavyweights for super PACs. We’re talking key tech backers such as chief executive of Hewlett-Packard Meg Whitman; Howard Cox, advisory partner at the venture capital firm Greylock Partners; and early Facebook investor Peter Thiel, who gave over $4 million to conservative super PACs this year.

The social media analytics company Klout announced on Tuesday they were rolling out a new scoring system, ditching the former 100-variables rating system and replacing it with one containing over 400 metrics, according to Mashable. The San Francisco-based tech company stirred up some controversy with their old scoring system, which many argued didn’t measure one’s “true influence.” (Case in point, Justin Bieber’s score trumping that of President Barack Obama’s until the recent change.) Now, Klout looks at over 12 billion bits of data each day across the seven social networking sites it looks at, which is 12 times greater than previously analyzed. With the new algorithm measuring real-world influence and the unveiling of “Klout Moments,” Mashable details what you need to know about the changes:

Office ethics and fashion choices can be tricky topics on their own. Put them together and it can easily create a major problem. Dressing for the office doesn’t have to be all work and no play. The key is finding that balance, and making sure that you’re sending the right message. “Overall, one should really be concerned with how they present themselves and how they represent the brand, meaning whoever you work for,” says Shawn Outler, a Macy’s vice president.

Exposing Students to STEM Earlier

The lack of black people in technology stems from the lack of STEM education. While America doesn’t produce a great number of white scientists, mathematicians and engineers, the disparity hits African Americans a lot stronger. African Americans received just 7 % of all STEM bachelor's degrees, 4 % of master's degrees, and 2 % of PhDs in 2009, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Thankfully, several extra-curricular programs like Black Girls Code are dedicated to teaching children and young adults from underrepresented communities.

With this initiative promising to focus on youth at the beginning of their educational careers, students will become exposed to all that STEM has to offer in the classroom.

Add to that rent, utilities, gas, and groceries, and it’s easy to dig yourself into a deep hole with the average entry-level salary. While surviving on a starting salary is difficult, it’s not impossible. Here are four tips from Darric N. Boyd, a Merrill Lynch certified financial expert, on getting (and keeping) a grip on your newfound finances. --- Jamie Harrison

(Not to mention, NBCOlympics.com will live stream every single event and the network will provide two different apps for mobile devices.) With nearly everyone toting a smartphone, the main sporting event will spark record-level engagement on popular social networking sites; it’s not a conversation everyone had access to during previous Olympic games. Web access has increased greatly since the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing, China. According to the International Telecommunications Union, there were approximately 1.5 billion Internet users worldwide (23% of the world’s total population). By July 27, that number will jump to about 2.3 billion users—an average of 33% of the total population. With the games fast approaching, Mashable outlined how the popular networks stack up today:

New Siri Features

I love the current Siri TV ads by Apple, and, quite frankly, it is the only place the personal assistant software seems to work. All jokes aside, it will be interesting to see Siri on new iPad. Here are some of its enhanced functions:
--Users will be able to post Facebook updates and send tweets with their voice.

--Siri has partnered with Yelp, OpenTable, Rotten Tomatoes, and sports score updates ranging from the latest scores to stats and schedules.

--The software assistant will continue expanding globally with its new language support, which will now feature Spanish, Italian, Korean, Mandarin and Cantonese, and optimize languages in 15 countries.

Apple is working with automotive manufactures to launch “Eyes Free,” a new feature that will allow a car to bring up Siri voice control. Nine auto manufacturers such as Audi, BMW, Jaguar and Toyota are working on this implementation with plans to incorporate the technology in the next 12 months.

Mistake 3: Having a negative or arrogant attitude.

Seldom in life does anyone rise to the top without paying their dues first. No matter what level you’re at in your career, your job will probably include some form of menial tasks. “Chances are many of the tasks that make you mutter, ‘Why do I have to do this?’ won’t go away with your first (or second, or third) promotion,” Winters says. “Suck it up and realize that everything is a learning opportunity. Then, look forward to the parts of your job that you enjoy.”

A rash of thefts is causing commuters to think twice about wearing expensive headphones such as Monster’s Beats by Dr. Dre on trains and buses. So what can you do to stay safe? You can go cold turkey and leave your audio gear at home, but if you can’t bear to be away from your tunes that long, there’s a partial alternative: Go small.

Instead of donning a large, glitzy headset that can be spotted from the other end of a crowded subway platform, use a small, in-ear headset that’s not as obvious but still offers high-quality deep bass and clear high notes. Many of these units incorporate Apple iPod-, iPad- and iPhone-friendly inline remote controls and microphones. If you’re looking to swap your big headphones for small beats, check out these portable and trendy earphones.--Robert S. Anthony

Last year, The Guinness Book of World Records named Samuel L. Jackson the highest-grossing actor of all time. The 63-year-old Washington, D.C. native has starred in over 100 films that have a combined box office gross of almost $8 billion. That’s quite a feat for a man who nearly squandered his talent and life away due to a serious drug and alcohol addiction.

Since starting out in the theater in the ’70s as a student at Morehouse College, Jackson has managed to build an estimated net worth of $150 million by appearing in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters, like Captain America and Star Wars and low budget critical hits like Eve’s Bayou. The always earnest, off-the-cuff actor has made a fortune playing stern, authoritative characters. His latest role and box office score was as Nick Fury in The Avengers, which broke domestic box office records, pulling in $200.3 million opening weekend. With the May 18th release of his new neo-noir thriller The Samaritan sure to add more zeros to Jackson’s bank account, BlackEnterprise.com decodes the hardest working actor in Hollywood. —Shydel James

This past weekend Disney and Marvel Studios joined forces to release The Avengers, an all-star fan boy film based off the popular comic book series. While critics expected the film to do well, at the end of film’s opening weekend it not only secured the No. 1 spot but also broke domestic box office records, pulling in $200.3 million over the course of three days. The Avengers’ ticket sales eclipsed the previous record-holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which opened with $169.2 million in summer 2011. Reality television is a complicated business. Some shows get immensely popular and springboard everyday people into celebrity stardom, but that fast track to Hollywood isn’t for everyone. However, there are those lucky ones who manage to build their brands, or expand their existing empires, based on their participation in America’s guilty pleasures. While some reality stars make little to no money at all—the average is about $5,000 a month—personalities who appear on popular shows like The Real Housewives franchise can make $8,000 and up per episode, and millions of dollars beyond their TV presence alone. It’s reported that the Real Housewives of New York racked in $75,000 per episode last season, while the Kim Kardashian and her family recently signed a deal worth an estimated $40 million for three more seasons of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Your Klout score is based on a rolling 90-day window. However, the most recent activity has more bearing on scoring than old activity. So, no matter how low your score is, what you do over the next week is all that matters in getting a higher score. Short-term lapses in social media presence also tend to have less of an effect, but beware of month-long drops. Your score will gradually decrease.

Tip: Keep in mind that the higher your Klout score, the more difficult it becomes to increase your score exponentially. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t blow past 80 in the next week, just keep working at it.

I’ve been involved in the Republican Party for most of my adult life and continue to be amazed at the lack of interest the party shows toward the Black community. Those who have followed my writings over the years know that I have been extremely critical of the party regarding this issue. But, I have been even more critical of the individuals the party chooses to showcase as the face of Black Republicans. I find many of these individuals to be an embarrassment to me as a person of color, as well as to the Republican brand. Many of the Black faces that are trotted out in front of the cameras have absolutely no connection to the Black community.

Despite public perception there are Black Republicans who possess both political and policy expertise that the party could and should tap in to. They exemplify the best of Republican values and thoroughly understand the need for the party to be more diverse. For many women, a power look doesn't just end with the right outfit or shoe. It's a head-to-toe story of branding that tells who they are, what they do and how well they do it.

Putting that best face forward is important, whether they're closing deals, working with clients, traveling the world or starting that next venture. In today's image-conscious business world, make-up is no longer just for movie stars and glamour girls, as many working women recognize the importance of presence, accentuating their best features and embracing the power of femininity.

In case you haven’t heard, Jeremy Lin is the New York Knicks point guard who went from an unknown bench player to an overnight and international sensation after being asked to step in due to a series of team injuries. While Lin didn’t start his first game alongside Knicks marquee players Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire, he’s emerged as a budding star of his own with his winning streak and impressive points per game avg. It may seem like a fluke to some, but the 23-year-old guard was ranked as one of the NCAA’s top ten players in his conference during the 2008-2009 season while attending Harvard University. Too bad he was cut by two teams—including the Knicks—at the beginning of this season. After getting his shot to play, Lin show and proved, scoring 38 points against perennial All-Star Kobe Bryant and leading the team to a seven-game winning streak. His exceptional play has become an inspirational story, and quite the profitable brand. BlackEnterpise.com Decodes the net worth of the rising star’s net work. —Adena Andrews

I've been exploring social media's latest runaway site – Pinterest*, a virtual bulletin board that allows users to share images, objects, and links they find interesting or inspiring. While, personally, I enjoy pinning photos of stylish outfits, chic MacBook and iPad cases, and outtakes from home décor magazines, I see the value this platform has for brands. When it comes to my brand, I’ve taken a thought leadership approach— just check my "Essential Books" board to see what branding, social media and marketing books I’m reading. This user-friendly platform is already proving to be valuable for businesses.
There’s serious potential to drive sales for business owners. Getting images of your products pinned and repinned can literally drive customers to your door step. At the very least, it will drive traffic to your website where customers can request your service.

On the Real Housewives of Atlanta, we've all seen the drama and antics of six women interacting both professionally and personally to make must-see TV. But Attorney Phaedra Parks is not your typical reality TV diva. She's been managing law partner at The Parks Group, P.C., for a decade, and has represented the likes of Bobby Brown, Jermaine Dupri and Ludacris, among others.

The mother, entrepreneur, and litigator, was president of the Gate City Bar Association, and actively sits on boards for organizations including the American Bar Association and the University of Georgia. One can't have all of this under her (designer) belt without knowing a thing -- or three--- about networking.

For instance, the categories of Best Original Song and Best Original Score feature several African American winners.
