The list of 40 "Titans: The Most Powerful African Americans in Business--and How They Shaped Our World", published in the 40th Anniversary Issue of Black Enterprise, recognizes and pays homage to the most important and impactful entrepreneurs and business leaders since Black Enterprise was founded 40 years ago. It’s time to get ready for the hottest Labor Day event around—the 17th annual Black Enterprise Golf & Tennis Challenge, Sept. 2-6 at the La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California. But this year is going to be especially hot. Not because the West Coast will be experiencing a heatwave, but because it also happens to be Black Enterprise magazine’s 40th anniversary. So to celebrate, we invited a few friends to this year’s Challenge—friends like Ronald Isley & The Isley Brothers, El DeBarge, Big Daddy Kane, Doug E. Fresh, and MC Lyte. They’re all coming through to make this Labor Day weekend one you won’t forget. DeBarge, a pop and R&B group made up of talented siblings, got heavy airplay on the radio throughout the 80s. El DeBarge—big brother to Chico, who performed at last year’s Golf & Tennis Challenge—was the group’s lead singer. He made songs like “All This Love,” “Rhythm of the Night,” “You Wear it Well,” and “Who’s Johnny?” instantly recognizable hits.

Choosing the right people to sit on your board of directors is critical to the success of your organization, says Froswa' Booker-Drew, founder of Soulstice Consultancy, which provides training and webinars for nonprofits. Even if they don’t go on to be an actual engineer, there are so many opportunities for people who have science degrees, says Evans (pictured here). You can go into business and law because science makes people good leaders and problem solvers, says Evans, who has a dual engineering degree from Spelman and Georgia Tech, interned at NASA in college, and works as a patent attorney. Explain to your child or teen that a science degree will open up more doors to employment and make them more marketable after college.

The cover of the collector's edition August 2010 40th Anniversary Issue of Black Enterprise features an editors' choice of the 40 covers that best tell the story of Black Enterprise as the undisputed chronicler of black American business achievement and economic progress. Here are the stories behind the covers, year by year. In the August 1970 premiere issue of BLACK ENTERPRISE, the mission statement read: “Lacking capital, managerial and technical knowledge and crippled by prejudice, the minority businessman has been effectively kept out of the profitable corner of the American marketplace. We want to help change this.” Over the past 40 years, BLACK ENTERPRISE has sought to do just that. The cover subject, Fayette, Mississippi Mayor Charles Evers was an example of the ingenuity and determination needed to run black-owned businesses such as the Medgar Evers Shopping Center, named in honor of his late brother, a prominent civil rights leader slain by an assassin in 1963.
