In the corporate world, wearing a suit and tie, or a dress with heels, is the norm. However, techies and entrepreneurs tend to have their own style, preferring to switch things up a bit. A male geek will likely wear a blazer and some sort of graphic tee with jeans. A female techie may add color to her outfit with a pair of trendy earrings. At Black Enterprise we love how CyberSynchs founder, Amos Winbush III (pictured here), keeps his wardrobe business casual with a hint of geek flare.

Entrepreneurs are known to have many qualities—persistence, leadership skills and a never-say-die attitude, to name a few. But even with those skills, even the most successful entrepreneurs have made their share of mistakes—and sometimes catastrophically. Robert Jordan, author of How They Did It: Billion Dollar Insights from the Heart of America (RedFlash Press $24.95) spoke with 45 successful entrepreneurs to gain an understanding of what it takes to successfully launch and grow a business. Among those featured is Joe Mansueto, founder of Morningstar, who sold the company for $2 billion, Raj Soin, who launched Modern Technologies Corporation (MTC) before selling it to BAE Systems for $425 million, and others who have taken their companies public in billion-dollar transactions. To be included in the book, they had to launch, grow and sell a company for approximately $100 million or go public for at least $300 million and had to be self-made, according to Jordan. “So the range ended up so that at the low end, Viresh Bhatia sold InstallShield for about $78 million and the high end was Dane Miller, who took Biomet private for $12 billion.” But what mistakes did these multi-millionaires make along the way and what can be learned from them? Read on... —Alan Hughes

In 1994 Curtiss Pope's first job was as a grocery store clerk. Only 15, he couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a document to show customers which aisle had the bread and which aisle had the dairy. “I had to be well versed in the store layout,” remembers Pope. Fast-forward to 2008; Pope, now a software engineer, was on a grocery run with his wife when he got a spark of inspiration. He wanted to create a mobile app to help customers navigate their stores. That's exactly what he did. The app, AisleFinder, helps shoppers find their grocery items based on their shopping list. It also provides users with coupons and collects information about shoppers’ habits. Pope’s wife, along with several of his friends and family, thought it was a great idea and gave him moral support; along with $22,000. Unfortunately, the national grocery store chains didn’t feel the same way. It took a year and a half before Pope, and his four-person staff, were able to get a pilot deal with national grocery retailer, Safeway Inc. After a lot of coaxing the store agreed that starting this January they would endorse his app in 40 of their stores across California. Although AisleFinder still has a long way to go, Pope says that the deal with Safeway is already opening doors to other retailers. Here are his 10 tips for closing a deal with a national brand.

Graphic Designer/Artist Depending on who you are, bigger IS better. And if you work with graphics then a large screen and a fast graphics engine are essential. Toshiba's Satellite Notebook series is a great laptop to consider if you don't mind the extra load, you rarely travel or you're thinking about replacing your desktop computer. They start out with display sizes as small as 11.6", but you can get a 18.4" screen with a Intel Core i5-460M processor and 4GB of DDRM3 memory for $999.99, and Core i7-740 QM processor for $1,399.99. The i5 and i7 processors are Intel's newest cpu's with tons of power and speed for heavy multitasking. Some laptops in the Satellite series also come with AMD's Phenom II Quad Core processor P940 at a substantial cost savings. Although not as popular as the Intel Core series of processors the AMD cpu's also provide users an opportunity to run multiple applications simultaneously.

This week's Social Media Connection is Chris Curtis, a web business expert, business radio personality and author of the upcoming book Work the Web! The Webwise Guide to Business Online. In her own words, Curtis shares how she uses social media to achieve her business objectives: When it comes to Social Media, I've carved out my own little corners where I can post until my heart's content (or until my brain can't think of anything to type), and connect with people all over the world. As a business owner, its proven to be a successful way to reach out to others and pitch ideas, form collaborations and even find new contacts for my seminars and workshops. You'll be amazed by the people you meet, and you'll most likely find opportunities in places you never thought of. One note of caution: Be careful what you put in writing. When you're connected for business purposes, don't say anything that you wouldn't say to a prospective client or a business partner. Remember, you're exposing your writing to thousands - even millions - of people who might take exception to interpersonal expressions, if they're thinking about connecting with you to do business. Think before you post. Not sure where to start? Here's where I hang out...
