Classic Notes

Learning curve:
Coming to terms with her voice’s extraordinary potential was initially difficult for Cooper. “In the beginning it was staggering. I recognize I have this gift, but what do I do with it? It was a weighty responsibility and challenge.” The discipline of opera during her college career was also at times overwhelming. “I struggled academically. I spent long nights learning how to sing and convey emotion in a foreign language–convincingly. There were times I when I wanted to give up, but my parents and my teachers didn’t give up on me and I persevered.”

Advice for aspiring opera singers:
Not surprisingly, music teachers have figured greatly in Cooper’s career, providing training, guidance, and motivation. “Surround yourself with people in your craft,” she urges. Although her gift comes naturally, Cooper has always been an ardent student. Being ultra-prepared for her ensemble role in a production headlined by her idol, Placido Domingo, has set Cooper apart from her peers and helped her snag more roles. “Having a stellar work ethic and perseverance will serve you well.”
