In wake of the upcoming Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit next week, BE paid a visit to Teen Vogue to chat with Elaine Welteroth, the 30-year-old boss who now runs the publication. At the summit, Welteroth will host a one-on-one conversation about ascending to the top of the corporate ladder with Apple Music’s Global CMO Bozoma Saint John.
During a Facebook Live interview with BE’s Selena Hill, Welteroth opened up about the direction Teen Vogue is moving in since she was named editor last year. The California native also talked about her recent engagement, the challenge of maintaining a work-life balance, and how #SelfcareSundays helps her reset each week.

On Diversity and Inclusion
Not only does Teen Vogue celebrate diversity, but Welteroth says that having a diverse and inclusive editorial voice is one of the things that make the publication unique.
“In terms of making sure our team is diverse, it’s critical because we know that our audience is diverse and it’s important to have that range of voices and point of views at the table in order for our audience to feel like there is someone on that masthead who speaks for me,” she said.

Like many young professionals, Welteroth says maintaining a work-life balance is a challenge. However, she committed to rejuvenating her mind, body, and spirit every Sunday. She says she decided to “dedicate Sunday to things that make me happy.” That includes working out, getting occasional massages, and going to church. She often shares her self-care regime on social media using the hashtag #SelfcareSunday.
Women of Power
Along with looking forward to hearing from business icon Ursula Burns at the Women of Power Summit, Welteroth says she plans to dig deep during her chat with Saint John. You can expect a “really transparent, really honest conversation about both of our journeys and our struggles and our successes,” she said, adding, “We don’t get to do that enough as black women who are in these seats of power.”
