On the heels of its 50 years of independence, Botswana came in at No. 1. Recognized for its “invigoratingly wild and thriving inspirational society,” Botswana is also home to a few magical, off-the-beaten path adventures such as canoe trails, and secluded islands.

Japan, No. 2 in this year’s rankings, is always No. 1 for travelers in search of an otherworldly experience.
And noted for its spectacular landscapes, the good ol’  USA  came in at No. 3. With the National Park Service turning 100 next year and celebrating a centenary of safeguarding Yosemite, Yellowstone, Badlands, Zion, the U.S. is also known for some of the best road trips. Â
