Black Immigrants in U.S. Earning 30% More than U.S. Born Blacks

Different economies emerging for the ‘different flavors of black’

As the black population in the United States grows, the diversity in the black community is unprecedented. According to new research by Nielsen, the number of black immigrants in the U.S. has more than doubled since 1980, to a record 3.8 million, accounting for 1 in every 11 blacks. By 2060, 1 out of every 6 U.S. blacks will be immigrants.

[Related: Black Women at the Bottom of Income Gap]

Black immigrants from Africa are driving the recent growth in immigration, accounting for 36% of the total foreign-born black population. Blacks from Nigeria and Ethiopia account for much of that growth. Still, the Caribbean population accounts for nearly 50% of all blacks, with most coming from Jamaica.

As the ‘different flavors of black’ emerge, different economies are also emerging. The Nielsen research finds that the median household income for foreign-born blacks is 30% higher than U.S.-born blacks.

“A lot of the African . . . immigrants are coming specifically to get an education in the States,” says Andrew McCaskill, senior vice president of global communications at Nielsen.

“High numbers are college-educated, and not only have college degrees, but also masters,” he adds.

McCaskill also says that the black immigrant population in the U.S. has a higher percentage of entrepreneurs, and an increased ability to keep dollars in their own communities.

They’re creating jobs in their communities, they’re buying products from their entrepreneurs. There typically is a culture of recycling dollars, which contributes greatly to the rising fortunes,” says McCaskill.

While U.S. born blacks have had to battle generations of institutional racism, such as predatory lending, that has put them at a socioeconomic and psychological disadvantage that some immigrants have not experienced in this country. McCaskill hopes the changing economic landscape for blacks, citing the Nielsen finding that income growth rates in black households are surpassing almost all others, will help U.S. born blacks and immigrants realize the economic power they collectively have.

“When black consumers see how much power they have, it will change the way African Americans look at themselves, and see how much [of a] power they have become economically. They have the power to drive the products and services that come into their lives and come into their communities,” says McCaskill.

It’s amazing what can be accomplished with a proper mindset and good work ethic. Many of these immigrants came to the U.S. with little or nothing. They overcame atrocities in their counties of origin unlike we’ve ever seen. And yet, there were no government handouts available in their countries. They came to the land of opportunity. And before they could even realize there were all kinds of excuses to not succeed, BOOM! They were earning 30% more than US born blacks. This article could have been an excellent case study in shedding a victim mentality, and how it relates directly to success. But I see the author chose to talk instead about the years of oppression the black community has faced and how that somehow justifies the earning differential among the black community. I contend many of these immigrants have seen oppression we couldn’t even imagine. And yet they came to the U.S. And quickly out earned US born blacks. I guess it goes to show you can keep making excuses or you can start making more money. But apparently you can’t do both.

      • commentreader says:

you immediately pointed out that the author has no right to say anything because of the color of his skin instead of pointing out the good/bad of his argument. that sounds wrong. point made that race is such troublesome issue in the US

        • Steve Van Horne says:

Actual wasn’t aware of the color of his skin. But based on his response, I’m guessing black?

          • Grayson Ward says:

Steve Van Horne go fuck yourself

          • Steve Van Horne says:

Greyson. Your contribution to the conversation is profound and so deep. Thanks! It’s a game changer. You must have thought for hours before you came up with that! Ok, now you can go back to smoking your crack pipe. You are some kinda “special”.

          • Grayson Ward says:

Thanks. It got a response. Don’t try to disguise your issue with black people believing they’re oppressed. You were waiting for an article like this to spout your so called intellectual comment. We are oppressed we have different things to deal with then they do. And do some research most of those black Africans coming over here are from affluent families. Yes there are those that come from nothing. Most are from affluent families. You were waiting to make the argument black and white.

          • Steve Van Horne says:

Oh yes Grayson, I’ve been searching high and low looking for an article that would allow me to degrade blacks. Dude, seriously. Lay off the crack. It’s making you sound stupid. At least I hope it’s the crack. Because if your that stupid for real…/smh

          • Grayson Ward says:

Steve Van Horne stop trolling. Isn’t there some type of fox news forum you could post on. Your just like those people who try to detract from black lives matter by saying all lives matter.

          • Steve Van Horne says:

Well actually, all lives DO matter. But I understand and for the most part am behind the BLM movement. I know that probably comes as a surprise. I don’t agree with fringe that want to kill cops and “fry em like bacon”. But I acknowledge there are those that don’t clearly understand the original movement and want to make an issue that all lives matter. They miss the point, either out of ignorance, fear, or both. But seriously Grayson, you bring nothing to the discussion with your crude, racist comments. Bring some substantive conversation and I will gladly engage you in dialog. I apologize for responding to you on your level. That was out of character for me and wrong.

          • Grayson Ward says:

I never said anything racist. I never accused you of being a racist. I’m just sick of hearing pick yourself up by your boot strap type of mentality. Well if it works for Tim it should work for Megan.

          • Chika Onuorah says:

False. Most of the African immigrants in America come from moderate homes. The children of the rich and affluent don’t do much.

      • Steve Van Horne says:

Was speaking to you, not for you. Wanna keep living in the past. Go ahead. The definition of insanity is continue to do what you’ve always done and expecting s different result. Like I said, you make excuses or you can make money. But your can rarely do both. Why don’t you use some of that passion to call your brothers and sisters to rise up and stop making excuses. There are thousands of black millionaires, corporate leaders, and black business owners. I guess someone is figuring it out. But go ahead and keep blaming the white man and things that happened decades ago, things that never happened to you personally. You weren’t a slave and I wasn’t a slave owner. Well, my kids might argue that. But the point is, decide to move beyond the obstacles or continue to waller is self-pity and victimization. Your choice.

        • ToneQuality says:

Spoken like a true privileged crakkka.

          • Joyce says:

for a black person like you who has been oppressed for so long.. you shouldn’t turn around and be the oppressor. stop the name calling and please be diplomatic and respectful.

          • Steve Van Horne says:

Thanks for having my back, Joyce. Unfortunately, name calling is what ignorant, simple-minded people do when they have nothing valid to add to the conversation. I’m actually learning things in this discussion. Things I would never have probably had the privilege of understanding, had I not engaged in thai dialog. I realize now the article doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s an unfair comparison. I get that. I just people would admit that personal responsibility plays a factor in EVERYONE’S life. I’m white, but I still have legitimate reasons for not accomplishing certain things in my life. I can either stay there or I can figure out a way, within the system, to overcome those obstacles. But it seems, for some people anyway, ANY mention of personal responsibility is met with denial and, as you can see, hatred toward me and the whole white community. It feels so hypocritical that some would do to me, what they are complaining the whites have done to them. I’ve had black employees. I’ve worked, and currently work under black leadership. Yep, I SERVE under black leaders. Proudly. And these black leader and even my black employees were paid the same as their white coworkers. Tone is a racist and an idiot. That attitude will keep him down more than any slavery history. He (or she) is still a slave, unfortunately. His slavery is between his ears. And apparently there’s not much else that exists between his ears.

You are neglecting the fact that we are talking about group dynamics not individualism.

          • Brian says:

Personal responsibility! Laughable. White people have made and still make money off of black americans. Why don’t white people take up their responsibility for putting us in the condition we are in and keeping us there. Then you want it both ways trying to explain that we are some how responsible and now different from the African? We are the same people. Save for our experience being here in America. Make sense not try and be the savior! We are know different than the African immigrant but what has changed that? What we we lazy and shift less back in Africa but now we are different? Lol white Supremacist and you don’t even know it.

        • Archer Fish says:

No one is making excuses. Just calling out what the deal is and how today became to be. I hazard to guess that everybody responding to the article are doing fair to middlin’, if not better. WHITES ARE LAZY! THEY HAVE NOT WORKED HARD FOR SH!T. THEY HAVE BEEN RECEIVING GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE FROM DAY ONE.

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT DID A MAJOR RE-DISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH TO WHITES AFTER WWII

HOW THE US GOVERNMENT HELPED TO CREATE WHITE WEALTH AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHERS. (ECONOMICS IN BLACK & WHITE)

“The foundation of American White supremacy sits tenuously on a rickety base of lies and deceptions about how Whites gained their wealth and status. A century and a half after slavery the median wealth or net worth of White families is $100,000; for Black families, it’s $25,000. The belief that Whites achieved this 4-1 wealth advantage by HARD WORK is an absurd and historical fantasy.”

Nonetheless, the airwaves are filled with the self-righteous pronouncements of Caucasian commentators anxious to “advise” Blacks to “work hard” and to “pull themselves up by their bootstraps” if they want to succeed in America. Not only do they seek to invent a fraudulent fairy tale that whitewashes a very bloody legacy, but they also aim to reaffirm the notion that “non-Whites” are naturally inferior and lazy and are thus responsible for having comparatively nothing. The truth is a whole lot nastier than that.

Many White folks have been receiving massive welfare or government aid since the very beginning of America.

Here are 11 ways federal government giveaways gave an economic head start to white people while excluding people of color.

          1. Free land

White Revolutionary War veterans were given nine million acres of Indian land.

          2. Legalized squatting

In 1841, the U.S. government legalized squatting, allowing white settlers to take over Native American land.

          3. Military-enforced squatting

The U.S. Government helped enforce squatting by employing the U.S. Army out west to beat back Native Americans from land coveted by white settlers.

          4. More free land

In addition to conquering half of Mexico, the U.S. Government reclaimed Latino landowners’ land for minor infractions such as missing paperwork or back taxes, and then sold it to Anglo settlers at a minor cost.

          5. Even more free land

The Homestead Act of 1862 provided free or very inexpensive land was provided by the government to 1.5 million white families.

          6. Revoked promises to slaves

Following the Civil War, freed slaves were promised ‘40 acres and a mule.’ Following Lincoln’s death, this promise was revoked and land was returned to its previous White owners.

          7. Preferential treatment of white workers

Through the New Deal, the U.S. Government provided minimum wages, union rights, and social security to industrial workers, almost all of whom were white. These same benefits, however, were denied to agricultural and domestic workers, most of whom were people of color.

          8. Government-sponsored aid

Government-sponsored aid was provided to struggling white farmers while denying it to most black farmers from the 1930’s right through the 1980s.

          9. GI Bill benefits

Provided free college education, vocational training, and cheap mortgages to nearly two million white WWII vets via the GI Bill, while simultaneously blocking most veterans of color from accessing the same benefits.

          10. Neighborhood investment through homeownership

Invested in infrastructure to expand suburban neighborhoods where white households were able to access government-subsidized mortgages while urban, inner-city neighborhoods were red-lined.

          11. Tax breaks

Tax breaks on investment income (such as dividends, capital gains and inheritances), which are disproportionately owned by wealthy white people, have been cut and lowered much more than taxes on income from work.

          1935: Social Security created

When Congress created social security in 1935, it provided a safety net for millions of workers, guaranteeing them an income after retirement. However, the act’s provisions excluded agricultural workers and domestic servants, who were predominantly African American, Mexican, and Asian. As low-income workers, minorities had the least opportunity to save, were least likely to have pensions, and were most vulnerable to economic recession, yet they were systematically excluded from the protection and benefits granted to most Americans.

1935: Wagner Act legalizes collective bargaining and labor organizing

Like Social Security, the Wagner Act helped establish an important new right – to unionize. The act’s original version prohibited racial discrimination, but the American Federation of Labor fought against it and the final version permitted unions to exclude nonwhites. As a result, nonwhites were not only locked out of higher-paying jobs, they were also denied union protection and benefits: medical care, full employment, and job security. Moreover, they were legally barred from challenging their exclusion. Although the laws changed in the late 1950s, many craft unions remained all white well into the 1970s.

1930s-1940s: Federal housing programs spur suburb growth

Beginning in the 1930s and 1940s, the federal government created programs that subsidized low-cost loans, opening up home ownership to millions of average Americans for the first time. At the same time, government underwriters introduced a national appraisal system, tying property value and loan eligibility to race. Consequently, all-white communities received the highest ratings and benefited from low-cost, government-backed loans, while minority and mixed neighborhoods received the lowest ratings and were denied these loans. Of the $120 billion worth of new housing subsidized by the government between 1934 and 1962, less than 2 percent went to nonwhite families. Nonwhites were locked out of home ownership just as most white Americans were finally getting in.

    • David Johannes says:

I agree with you to an extent. Blacks in the US do experience some socioeconomic oppression, but so have the blacks coming from the Caribbean, Africa and elsewhere. At least blacks in America have social programs to put food on their table, but third world countries like Jamaica can’t afford those kind of programs. Jobs are lacking, and basic necessities are expensive. That is why people fly out in droves to the land of opportunity. I think it’s disingenuous to say that blacks born in America have experienced more oppressioni than what blacks immigrants faced in their homelands. As a matter of fact, it’s probably downright false. But at the same time we can’t say that the only reason is that blacks are satisfied with being victims.

      • Archer Fish says:

That is not an accurate assessment. These folks come from places where they are the majority, that for the most part, are socialized and has developed culture that suits them as oppose to a people being in someone else cultural incubator.

There’s a problem with your narrative. “Many of these immigrants came to the U.S. with little or nothing.” I can’t speak to all of the immigrants, but I can speak to the African/Black and these immigrants are very special because they are the best of the best and they come to America to have access to a different set of resources than what they have in their countries. Many of the African immigrants have NOT seen oppression. I’m not sure what oppression you are referring to, but the only oppression they have seen largely is from the capitalistic giants of the world. And when they come here…”LEGALLY” by the way, they often return home with more resources. But what many African immigrants are finding more and more, depending on the region they are coming from, is that their family at home is doing much better than they are here in America. As I said…THERE IS A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH YOUR NARRATIVE, BUT…Keep telling yourself that.

      • Steve Van Horne says:

Yeah as I’ve been discussing it in another forum, I’ve come to realize that is the case. I hadn’t really thought of it that way. Not sure it’s always the best and brightest coming over but you are correct that in large part that’s likely the case. But I still contend regardless, a person ultimately has to decide how much they are going to let the negative things around them affect what they accomplish. Look, I know there are people in this world that for whatever reason, aren’t really capable of acheiving much. That’s actually true in every culture, even the “privileged white” culture. But I just think it’s sad when perfectly capable people allow a belief system from reaching their full potential.

AND THERE ARE MANY, MANY, MANY MORE.. DON’T BELIEVE THE RACIST PROPAGANDA

    • Derrick Lunitik Harper says:

You completely missed the point. It shows that the influence the US has on blacks is a negative one. You cant turn the narrative into something that it’s not meant to be. It mainly shows that the system the US creates blacks is actually designed for blacks to be more exposed to failure than success.

      • Steve Van Horne says:

Which part of the system, Derrick? You talking about the minority college grants, minority business development grants, disadvantaged business grants, disadvantaged business point system on government contract bidding? I’m not saying these programs aren’t necessary. But to say the US has intentionally created a system to “keep the black man down” is delusional at best. Paranoid at best. Last time I checked, the U.S. IS black people, too. Heck, the leader of the cohntey is even half black. Apparently, he hasn’t done much for you in the last 7 years. And I would have to agree with you on that.

        • bcs2k11 says:

Historically Derrick is right — but nowadays things have changed. Sadly, it’s tough for a lot of folks (black and white) to make the changes necessary to take advantage and the concept of personal-accountability is not a popular thing.

          • Archer Fish says:

How exactly have things changed. Derrick stating facts that are relevant today. That make the mistake of taking your own individual experience and using that as factor to determine the situation/outcome of a group.

        • JazzyJerome says:

I have to agree there is too much available in the U.S. to not be able to get on your feet and thrive.

          • Archer Fish says:

A simple response to a complex problem is a gross error.

          • JazzyJerome says:

Then you committed the same gross error as you offered nothing but and empty statement. The fact is there are many anti poverty programs available people simply don’t use them. The problem is not complex but the solution is simple. Learn things that pay good money.

          • Archer Fish says:

What evidence do you have that folks in this nation do not use these so-called “anti-poverty” programs? And what evidence do you have that demonstrates how readily available these ‘programs’ are? Again you again you make a simple response to a complex situation tantamount to a simple 1+1=2 problem. If it were simple we would be having this discussion because. Furthermore, what does this have to do with black immigrants earning 30% more than black folk born in this country???

          • JazzyJerome says:

What are you solutions?????? The answer to your question is obvious if they were using them they wouldn’t be in the situation that they are in. Your mayors office has the information, your local unemployment office has the info it is not difficult to find I found out during orientation for unemployment. The majority of the people taking the test to get the grants were African and Russian. What is this complex situation you are talking about please explain this? “Furthermore, what does this have to do with black immigrants earning 30% more than black folk born in this country???” Immigrants learn things that pay more money it has everything to do with it. They also circulate money among themselves. My uncle and his sons use to drive parking lots for a living they were making 80 to 90k per year no degree, why because they learned something that paid money. I make the same type of money they did why, because I learned something that pays more money. I have talked a few of the young brothers around here into using grants to get their CDL and HVAC jobs that can’t be exported, they are doing alright now. I think the study is comparing apples to oranges. Lets flip it, if the top 10% of African Americans migrated to any of the countries mentioned they would own it as their net worth far exceeds the natives of those countries. If this was done based on demographics the picture would be quite different.

          • Archer Fish says:

You’re funny. You think that by using those ‘opportunities’,
which you provided no evidence of how many are or aren’t, that that would close the gap on black immigrants who according to the article is making 30% more. Secondly, you speak as if you went to an unemployment agency, that they would be virtually empty as to suggest that black folk aren’t attempting to take advantage of the these social help outs as they should. I don’t have to know you to know if you go to any labor department where we reside in large numbers we are all up in there taking advantage of what you think we aren’t. I see that you fail to show what the immigrants, black immigrants are doing that make so much more that blacks here aren’t. You gave a broad generalization with no concrete examples. You also neglect the fact that they get government set asides, as so many have already stated, not privy to black folk here. One in particular being low interest loans. You don’t speak to the redlining that hinders black folks here a significant avenue, to gain/build wealth. And the credit rotation does not speaking to EARNING but SAVINGS, a big difference. Azuzu, which you are alluding to, has nothing to do
with it. Save the quasi-rugged induvialist paradigm using personal individual(s) experiences which only obscures the condition of the group or collective that works to damage or dismiss the potential to interpret acutely and analyze the reality of the broader community (“My uncle and his sons…” “I have talked to a few…’). Your flip problematic, because it assume that the 10% would go abroad making the kind of money or equal value of that they are making here? IF that were the case, then those coming here would not come here, those who professionals where they reside, being that the education in may of those countries match and exceed the education here in the states. So again, it is not as simple as you say. The only thing simple about what you said, is the mere saying it. White folks average take home annually is about 100k, where for black folks, about 7k. And you think that is merely because black folk aren’t taking advantage of opportunities? You spiked your kool-aid?

          • JazzyJerome says:

LMAO no sir but I think you are swimming in
it. I already knew what you were alluding to, the white man the white man. You give too much credit to racism, it is not all powerful. If that were the case then it should affect black immigrants too no? Perhaps they like them better so
they allow them to do better which doesn’t make sense since they are still black. Like I said they learn things that make more money. There are plenty of Haitians and Africans around here and the majority of them work decent jobs there
            is no secret formula.

Where is your proof people are using the help and can’t
get ahead? What set asides do BLACK immigrants get? Please provide the source of their loans I don’t know any Black immigrants that have received special help. Crying about the white man is not giving us good loans is our fault for
not banking black. Marcus Garvey told the people of his time what to do but most did not listen. MLK in his final days told us to take our money out of white banks and put it into black banks the majority did not do it. Malcolm X pretty much said the same thing in his Ballot or Bullet speech. When so
called integration came along the most damage was done since blacks stopped doing business with themselves. As long as blacks continue to not put black first then we will always suffer.

Immigrants pool their resources and circulate money among themselves. I remember when I was a kid everybody use to
make fun of Puerto Ricans because there were so many of them living in one house.Years later they own the majority of the bodegas in the northeast. They saved money by sharing the cost of the rent and started businesses.(Alton Maddox has a video speaking about that) An Indian guy I use to work with told me when he first moved here they all lived in the same house to save money.

“Save the quasi-rugged induvialist paradigm using personal
individual(s) experiences” You are joking yes? It is called lead by example you find something that works you pass the knowledge on but I guess in your world that is a bad thing. We get criticized for not reaching back but when we do we have someone to find something to be wrong with it. I am still waiting on your solution to the complex problem.

“Your flip problematic, because it assume that the 10% would go abroad making the kind of money or equal value of that
they are making here?”. Let me break it down for you. The top 10% richest blacks in the US would include Oprah, Magic, Jordan, pro athletes etc. If you compared their income to the average in any of the nations mentioned it would be lopsided since those countries are poor they would own it.

        • Derrick Lunitik Harper says:

The scary part about that is you are a White guy that know more about those programs than 95 percent of blacks that are coming from a projects with the main goal of survival. It’s so easy to say “they should be able to shake the nightmare of a childhood of 18 years” then turn around and say “Soldiers who deal with it for 6 months should get “PTSD” because they saw some things that will bother them the rest of their lives.” Well being that I am from the projects and I have a Ph.D in Engineering, own three businesses, and the sad part is I didn’t qualify for any of those grants for so called blacks you named. Did you look at the stipulations of those grants, or just spoke based on conservative viewpoints fed to you? Actually, I have been more successful as a business owner under President Obama now being that I can insure my employees for less, offer them a more competitive package, as well as get grants for educating my employees. What part of the system? Well let’s start with the system that you would never understand because just like you can’t tell a person what they should and should not go through with PTSD, how is it fair to assume that inner city kids who most likely have less positive influence should want to do better when they are raised with a main objective of survival?

          • Steve Van Horne says:

Your success just proves the only point I really was trying to make. You overcame the obstacles. Figured out a way. Didn’t let circumstances get in your way. Didn’t accept the mindset that it’s no use trying because you’re black and it’s not going to matter anyway. So I’ll just live this miserable existence because there is no hope. You didn’t buy into that, if what you say about your success is true. Although, I have to be honest. You had me up until you started telling me about how obama has made your life so much better. What??? If your health insurance premiums went down then I want to know what company you are with. Mine and everyone I know went way, way up. Almost 50% under the unaffordable health care act. And honestly, I don’t think the golfer-in-chief has done much of anything for the black community. Read the posts here, for example. Everyone is still allegedly oppressed. Racial tensions haven’t been this high since the 60s. BO is a race-baiter just like The tax-evading Al Not-so-Sharpton. Maybe he hasn’t done much for the black community because he’s half-white so that makes him only half as effective, according to some here on this forum. I too am a business owner. This administration is NO friend to small businesses. If you deny that, I question whether or not you are who you say you are.

(IN AMERICA EVERYTHING IS BY DESIGN FROM THE SUBURBS TO THE GHETTOS)

HOW THE U.S. GOVERNMENT CREATED THE SUBURBS AND BLOCKED OUT BLACKS VIA REDLINING BY HISTORIAN RICHARD ROTHSTEIN

After WWII, the U.S. government invested in infrastructure to expand suburban neighborhoods where white households were able to access government-subsidized mortgages while urban, inner-city neighborhoods were red-lined.

The U.S. government provided free college education, vocational training, (free) grant money and cheap mortgages to nearly two million white WWII vets via the GI Bill, while simultaneously blocking most veterans of color from accessing the same benefits…

“In the early 1950s, late 1940s – when Levittown and the Daly City development and others around the country were built, they sold for about seven, eight, $9,000. In today’s terms, that would be about $125,000 or about two times or two-and-a-half times the national median income. Returning war veterans were able to afford homes like that. Black and white could have afforded them, but only whites were permitted to buy them.

Well, today, homes in places like Levittown or Daly City or the suburbs in places like St. Louis and Baltimore and other cities around the country that were built in this fashion sell for 400, $500,000, about seven times national median income. Well, in the intervening period, in the 50 years following the construction of these homes and their purchase by working-class, lower-middle-class white families, those white families gained appreciation – equity appreciation – of about 350, $400,000. They used that money to send their children to college, to send their grandchildren to college and to borrow against the equity in the house to start businesses. If they sold their homes, they gained that bonus and bequeathed it to their children and grandchildren.

Black-Americans, who were denied the opportunity to purchase those homes at a time when they could have afforded it just as easily as white families could, they gained none of that appreciation. The result is that today, Black-American average incomes, family incomes, are about 60 percent of white family incomes. But Black-American wealth is about 5 percent of white family wealth. And that difference between 60 percent of income and 5 percent of wealth is entirely attributable to federal housing policy.” – Historian, Richard Rothstein

WHITES DID NOT WORK HARD FOR SH!T. THEY WERE GIVEN GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS FROM DAY ONE IN AMERICA

          • Steve Van Horne says:

I liked this particular comment because I agree we should celebrate the amazing successes of these black Americans. Why were they successful? There are probably many reasons. One thing is for sure, however. They didn’t allow an unfair system or culture to hold them down. They didn’t drudge up things that happened decades ago to use as an excuse for failure or apathy. They excelled because they believed they could and they DID. They were likely unaffected, just like im unaffected by thing that happened 100 years ago or more. Or even 50 years ago for that matter. They likely took advantage of programs that WERE available to them, rather than live in a dark past. People can stay in the past and let it affect them, or they can focus on the present and the future. In almost all cases, it’s a choice. Your comments that all whites are lazy…well, it doesn’t really even deserve a comment other than to prove, YOU are the racist here. All this talk about racism….well last time I checked, when you make a statement about an entire group of people, it’s called racist. Therefore, YOU are the biggest racist in this whole conversation.
You come in here and give a dissertation of reasons for black Americans not being able to be successful. Then you cite a multitude of people that completely discredits your previous points. Not sure I understood your logic in that.

      • bcs2k11 says:

Wrong. I’m Black, politically independent, Obama voter, travel globally and have spent a lot of time on the African continent. With that said, “nowadays” this is the easiest country for a Black person to rise up and be successful (without bribing someone). If you’re black and can’t make it here, you won’t make it anywhere. It gets no easier.

        • Reallytruly says:

You’re no black, when someone on he internet announces “Wrong, I’m black” hat is a sure sign he/she s white. Please take several seats down.

          • bcs2k11 says:

Yeah some white folks will lie like that. It’s a coward’s move. I’m from the oldest black group in the USA. Gullah Geechee. As black as it gets in the USA. But being black here is limiting spiritually. I come alive (as a black man) whenever I travel to the motherland and put my foot on the red soil. No seats need.

          • Archer Fish says:

If you are Gullah Geechee, then you should know better. Because those island down the in S.C. where the GG brothas/sistas have been for centuries is getting snatched up by those who tend to favor black immigrants over black folk who been here from the get go…

        • Archer Fish says:

Don’t make the mistake of taking your own individual experience as proof to what a collective is going through. 40 plus million black folks, just by the law of averages, of course some black folks are going to do well. Do/did you know that there were black folks during the time of slavery in parts of the south that had investment firms? Yet they would not and did not dare say that because they were doing well, that slavery was not a hindrance to their people. And rugged individualism is a myth.

        • sidbrown210 says:

This is an absolutely ridiculous comment. Immigration is all about choice – those who were in the position to make a choice. And please before people here talk about “came to the country with little or nothing … blah, blah, blah is the EXCEPTION to the rule, not the standard. Many who come here are already in a position to arrive and have a lot of tools to make it here. And I laughed out loud when it’s suggested that “it gets no easier” in other places. If you have the resources, I encourage any African-American to spend any amount of time in Europe. Don’t believe me, the evidence for this is legion, from actors to businessmen, to artists, to entertainers. If anything you are more likely to make it there.

    • Reallytruly says:

Please stop , immigrants have access to far more governmen programs hand-outs loans educaional opportunities etc hat american-born blacks, I know immigrants that have full renal assistance and that attend educational programs that the U.S. Government is picking up the tab for, you have no idea what you are talking abou and are quite “out of touch”.

      • Archer Fish says:

        Agree with Reallytruly.

      • realposter says:

Actually – it’s just about the opposite… No wonder the native born have such problems. Too much mis-information and ignorance.

      • TooBad4You says:

Immigrants do have more access to all resources than black Americans born here. That’s why I don’t understand black Americans siding with Democratic and liberal law makers. The funds given to these illegal immigrants should be used to advance the people here. That money should be invested in schools, communities, and jobs. I don’t have any issue with the immigrants mentioned in this article, people who went through the process the right way. The issue is when parasites come here and drain our resources to the point that American communities that have been struggling for many decades

        • TooBad4You says:

Can’t improve their position. Everyone needs to see where the real issue is. We would be so better off as a whole is all Americans…black, white, and everyone in between came together. Instead black Americans are used as pawns. Told that Republicans hate them, and promised the world by Democrats. This leaves for a fucked up experience, which is probably what the politicians want.

    • bcs2k11 says:

It applies to doing better than whites just as well. Immigrants from anywhere generally have higher motives and work ethic than locals and are likely to earn more than them. Most of the immigrants in my department (700+ people) make more than black and white locals.

      • JazzyJerome says:

This is true immigrants have the go getter spirit that the native born generally don’t have. Native born is complacent.

        • Archer Fish says:

And these immigrants are coming over here already educated and with a support system. Trust me, folks from these other countries aren’t the impoverished of where they come from.

          • JazzyJerome says:

I think the article is half azz so to speak it is comparing apples to oranges. If it was done by demographics the picture would look different.

          • Phacetious Plebbe says:

Many of them are. What differentiates them is the work ethic they possess, because of the recognition of the sacrifice it took for them to reach there. So for the majority of them, their arrival is not a ceiling, it is the floor. Therefore, only one way to go, and that is up.

      • TruthTella777 says:

This study is racist divide and conquer B.S. The racist Nielson organization surveys like 100 families and then they put out their idiotic conclusions. You can’t compare 40 million Black Americans to 6 million Black immigrants. It is like stating that more White people commit crime and more White people are in poverty. Well there are 69 million whites in .America so of course there will be higher actual numbers of crime and poverty among whites. It is the same in this scenario comparing Black Americans to Black immigrants. Number two there are a great deal of Black immigrants who receive welfare and who commit crime. Look at the number of deportations that occur every week. More Blacks from the Caribbean are deported every month for committing felonies than any other group.

“In 2012, 51 percent of households headed by an [illegal or legal] immigrant reported that they used at least one welfare program during the year, compared to 30 percent of native households,” the report said…

The report found starkly different welfare rates among different groups, with 73 percent of immigrant households from Central America and Mexico and 51 percent of households from the Caribbean receiving welfare. Meanwhile, only 26 percent of immigrant households from Europe and 17 percent from South Asia received welfare in that period.

The types of welfare examined in the study included Medicaid as well as cash, food and housing programs.

Thirdly, in the American system, credit is king. An advantage that newly arrived ADULT immigrants have over most adult US citizens is that they start fresh with good credit possibilities. This is a fact. Once they get their papers, a job, and establish credit, many start off with an average 620 credit score. Meanwhile, many American adult citizens are deep in debt or have bad credit by the age of 25, because the system is designed to keep you in debt. Lastly, DON’T BELIEVE THE RACIST PROPAGANDA. Typical response. A true apples to apples comparison are not immigrants vs. indigenous populations. A true comparison would be indigenous vs indigenous communities. There you’ll find it’s heavily skewed in the opposite direction. You’re right, it IS amazing what can be accomplished with a proper mind set but expecting EVERYONE to accomplish the exceptional and then call it “the norm” is BS. The logic inherently rewards those who continue to benefit from a system based on nepotism and entrenches inequality. I’m an American citizen and shouldn’t have to feel fortunate I’m not escaping atrocities or war just to realize an experience other groups expect on a daily. It’s the age old argument – just because something is, doesn’t mean it should be, and if that’s the excuse for not trying to change anything, then we would still be riding horses and living in caves.

I up-voted your comment but there is one or two caveats. 1) contrary to what people here think – not all were living on the floor eating with their hands. My parents were both skilled. Secondarily – the degrading experienced by blacks the hands of other races in this country is not the same.

“In 2012, 51 percent of households headed by an [illegal or legal] immigrant reported that they used at least one welfare program during the year, compared to 30 percent of native households,” the report said..

Nonwhites were locked out of home ownership just as most white Americans were finally getting in..

The U.S. government provided free college education, vocational training, (free) grant money and cheap mortgages to nearly two million white WWII vets via the GI Bill, while simultaneously blocking most veterans of color from accessing the same benefits.

The point made in this article could be true, but I know there are many other factors to consider before declaring this as an accurate comparison between born black americans and people coming from africa to america. And for those who think all black people who speak out on race issues are just playing the blame game, you are all wrong. Go back and do your homework and try to put yourself in others shoes to develop a more intelligent opinion. Have a college education and I graduated at the top of my class and I work in my profession. That doesnt mean I am not well aware of the issues with race in this country that have been going on since it was founded til this very day. And Theres nobody who can tell me I dont work dam hard to try and get ahead in this world, without blaming people for any prblems I encounter through the way.

Ubail, you win the “most honest, real, post of the day” award in my opinion. Unfortunately, you will likely be accused of being a white troll posing as a black man. Or be called “uncle”. But that is the ONLY poInt I was trying to make in my original comment. Of course, as you can see it stirs up anger when one even mentions personal accountability. If you take victimization out of the equation, you are only left with personal accountability. And that scares the hell out of people because now the only one you can really blame is that person in the mirror. Props to you for realizing that and becoming a productive member of society. It must frustrate you even more than me. I always have a shade of doubt thinking “maybe it is impossible for people to have success because of the system. And maybe I just don’t see it because I don’t live in it”. But then someone like you comes along, and there are MANY like you. And I realize, of course people can make it if they stop allowing the system to keep them in bondage. Part of it is to stop listening to the negative rhetoric. I’m reminded of one of my favorite sayings, “whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are correct”.

The U.S. government provided free college education, vocational training, (free) grant money and cheap mortgages to nearly two million white WWII vets via the GI Bill, while simultaneously blocking most veterans of color from accessing the same benefits.

“In 2012, 51 percent of households headed by an [illegal or legal] immigrant reported that they used at least one welfare program during the year, compared to 30 percent of native households,” the report said.

Lastly, DON’T BELIEVE THE RACIST PROPAGANDA. lol. so says the same media and research groups that use the media to portray Africans as starving people, living in huts, swollen bellies and flies on their faces to African Americans. Then turn around and portray through the media Black Americans as gang bangers and prostitutes to Africans in Africa. SMH. NOW, that more Africans are migrating to the United States adding to the overall number of black people in America the same media and research groups play divide and conquer by pitting U.S. born blacks against Black African Immigrants. By playing to the fear that the Immigrants are taking all the jobs. SMH. The last thing the powers that be want is BLACK UNITY. So they as sewing the seed of discord early. DON’T Believe the HYPE.

    • Steve Van Horne says:

I would agree. The powers that be, ie obama definitely don’t want unity among the black community. Keep you beat down and convinced you are victims and they maintain control of you. Unfortunately too many in the black community are too blind to see they are being played by the liberals who want to keep not just poor blacks, but poor whites, Hispanics, dependent upon government programs. That ensures they keep getting elected and stay in power. It’s extremely effective. Proof? Just read most of the posts here. Most everyone believes they are a victim. And guess what? Where whether you believe you are a victim or you don’t, you are correct. Think about that.

  7. Keedra says:

Wow… People’s analysis is so problematic. First of all, look at the classes of African born immigrants to this country. The majority are not “peasants from the countryside.” So, we are comparing apples and oranges when we generalize U.S. born Blacks on welfare vs Africans on the continent with more means than the majority of those still on the continent. Secondly, the point was made in the article about the STRUCTURAL obstacles in place for U.S. born Blacks. They can’t hold the threat of deportation over our heads (though they lock us up instead). If those obstacles were not there, then we would not be in a capitalistic system. Wake up people. The American Dream is not for everyone in this system. Think about it for more than two seconds. Thirdly, this reinforces the meritocracy myth in such a way that is so sickening. The comments suggest that there are yet still so many people fooled by this narrative. And lastly, this could run the risk of pitting Africans born in the U.S. against recently immigrated ones. Hopefully, that is not the case. However, I did notice lots of white commentary because many jump at the opportunity to divide and conquer.

    • me says:

The African immigrants are not rich people. They are poor people who have nothing coming here believe me because I’m one of them and all my friends are not rich at all. The lottery is random and believe me for most of the winners the relatives and friends have to get together and contribute for most to afford their tickets to get here. The difference is that African immigrants have not grown up knowing limits ,knowing racial discrimination so its never an issue when they come here. It never limits them mentally. When you come here you have to start from scratch since they don’t recognize degrees from their origin countries for those who had them. A friends hosts you so you have to work very hard to get on your own feet before they keep you out. You do what you have to do to survive. The other thing is parents in Africa are all about school they drill that into you and question you about it when you are here so most of us go to school get degrees and very many get masters degrees.

  8. Deeper Thoughts says:

They don’t tell you everything when they write stories like this. Black immigrants make more than Black Americans Bc many receive The U.S. Diversity Visas which largely benefits African Immigrants. Annually the U.S. Issues 50,000 of these visas & typically almost 50% goes towards African immigrants in the lottery. Let’s be clear, those who are chosen are the best of the best. They are the doctors, professors, businessmen etc in their country, so already they would command a better salary. This shouldn’t be a divisive issue. Black people getting $$$ ought to be celebrated. Let’s stop with the crabs in a barrel mentality.

    • frank_luc says:

I think you’re confusing diversity visas with H1-b. Diversity visas are awarded based on a random lottery system, it’s not merit based.

    • Smoovestyle23 says:

Actually a lot of African Immigrants come here with nothing. And the best of the best? You obviously don’t know how the lottery system works.

It’s easy to take a small group and compare them to a larger and come up with a better out come.how about comparing them to asians or indians. Also culture means a lot and they would tend to stick together and pool their resources.I’ve also notice that it seems that some people are more welcoming to them than they are to america born blacks.Asians do better than blacks and whites in school does that mean that we are all dumber than them.

  12. JamaicanJewel says:

This is one story I will not go into depth on because my views are too controversial and I don’t have the time for that debate. But consider that the people to whom this article
refer would never themselves write about themselves “As the black population in the United States grows…” We are nationalistic and Negro by race, notwithstanding that Jamaicans come in all shades so the article is saying that all Jamaican immigrants are Negro? Someone has never ridden on an AirJamaica flight!

    • realposter says:

Exalty – it’s amazing that people are too ignorant to know there are ethnically – white – Indian – Chinese and every mixture in between – in Jamaica.

  13. Esther C-Tayor says:

I totally agree that this study is bullcrap…it doesn’t highlight the major obstacles that Native Black Americans face on a daily struggle grind from their permanently instituted Oppressors vs. new Black Immigrants who have none to face UNTIL they are fully integrated and invested in the American systems (children, schools, career, predujice, racism, sexism, classism, glass ceiling) and are then viewed as Native Black Americans and thus subjected to the same Biased treatment…that’s why the distorted views and stereotyping continues to pit Black Americans against Black Immigrants and as I see it Black skin against Black skin cause no matter where you originate from and the color of your skin is Black then you are BLACK and the Entire world says and treats you as a Sub-Human.

    • realposter says:

but your attitude shows exactly why black immigrants do better on average… they don’t have the same chip on the shoulder. Oh and try to tell a black person from Haiti and Jamaica they are the same and see the response you get. Likewise try it with someone from Mali and someone from Kenya. Not the smae at all.

  14. TruthTella777 says:

“In 2012, 51 percent of households headed by an [illegal or legal] immigrant reported that they used at least one welfare program during the year, compared to 30 percent of native households,” the report said.

BLACK AMERICANS ARE INTELLIGENT AND THEY ARE DOING MANY GREAT THINGS! 90% of the businesses profiled in Black Enterprise magazine are owned by Black Americans.

“Nielsen Share of Wallet Study, November 2014: This project was conducted in two stages. First, an online English-language survey was given to a general population (White, African-American, Hispanic and AsianAmerican) sample of 5,028 respondents 18 years or older, weighted by gender, age and race. Second, oversamples were conducted with 1,442 Asian-American respondents; oversamples were conducted entirely online and in English. The goal of this study was to see “who spends what, and where, and with what payment method” on a solid empirical grounding. Verticals analyzed included: Retail/Specialty Retail, Telcom/Financial, Restaurant (Fast Food/QSR and Casual Dining), Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) and Travel/Entertainment”

They also came from countries w/ half the laws and regs that we have. Most countries don’t keep lifetime records for old misdemeanors- like the U.S. does. And despite what many Americans think, misdemeanors DO keep Americans un-employed. If AMERICANS would get on board, and realize ALL Americans are being put at a disadvantage in this global market- for the aforementioned reason- we’d actually create the change so desperately needed in this country. If we keep allowing this to happen, it’s going to destroy ALL American lives- regardless of your race.
