A Healthy Perspective

A Washington, D.C.-area doctor goes green

greenrecycleSoon after Sharon and Christopher Warner moved into their new, Washington, D.C.-area home eight years ago, they decided to do their part for conservation by using less water.

Within two weeks, they had installed water-saving toilets. But the pair quickly found that taking one step toward creating a healthy environment was a bit like eating just one potato chip—they just could not stop themselves from doing more. Soon, the home was sporting high-efficiency air filters, new ductwork, and a ventilation system that continually draws in fresh air.

“I began to buy more recycled goods and educate our three kids on ways to save the environment,” says Sharon, 40, practice administrator for the medical offices of her husband, Christopher, 40, an OB/GYN.

So when the Warners decided to open a second medical office to accommodate their expanding services two years ago, making it green was a “no-brainer,” says Sharon. Dubbed the Washington Wellness Institute, the 3,300-square-foot office is thoroughly environmentally friendly. The Warners believe its completely green interior renovation is the first of its kind in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

“We want to become the standard in environmentally responsible medical facilities,” Sharon says. “We want to set an example.”

The office is situated in a high-density commercial area and is accessible by train and bus, all of which minimizes the strain on local infrastructure. It uses energy-efficient lighting and efficient appliances such as a Liebherr refrigerator and a Miele washer and dryer, all of which have the Energy Star certification. In addition, the carpet, furniture, and glass are all high in recycled content.

The office’s wood was farmed using an approach that does not deplete forests, and its paints are free of chemicals that can vaporize into the air. The Warners have applied for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the United States Green Building Council, which was instrumental in providing guidance for the project.

The couple’s efforts are part of what may be a growing trend in the healthcare industry. In a survey of healthcare administrators released last spring by McGraw-Hill Construction, 19% of organizations reported that they expected to be “significantly involved” with green building in 2008. That percentage marked a threefold increase from the prior year.

But the greening of the Institute goes beyond the building materials. The office uses recycled paper, is transitioning to electronic medical records, and uses hemp scrubs and gowns that employees wash, rather than paper ones that they throw out.

Outfitting an environmentally friendly office was “not cheap,” Sharon admits. But she believes that energy savings will offset the cost over time. And being in the business of health—the Institute provides everything from OB/GYN to personal training to cosmetic procedures—means providing a “true healing environment,” Sharon says. That goes for the nine-person staff as well, she adds. Employees prefer to work at the newer office, with its natural light and

Still not receiving points for watching videos in it’s entirety. Haven’t had my points totaled since last week. Anyone else having this problem?

    • Fuzzy Spritz says:

Yes Renee, I too have had no points added even after watching numerous times. I have even signed out and signed back in, listen, post/share and still have no points added or courses completed. Thank goodness we can still have access to the course information. Disappointed with the tech support nothing has changed since last week 🙁

      • Infinitehi4 says:

Ok, now I am reading there is more of us having the same problem.

        • Jerome Espy says:

I am in this boat too. I’ve watched the vids numerous times, but no points. Even sharing the social media connects isn’t registering.

    • Jorge says:

Same thing Rrenee9 , I agree with Fuzzy

    • Cortinai says:

yes, i”m having the same problem

    • Infinitehi4 says:

I am having the same problem and I am also not getting the number of points that’s indicated.  I have sent the tech department a couple of emails because the contest is “points” dependant I believe.  Go to the FAQ tab on top and search near the bottom where you can send an email if you are having technical problems.  Hopefully, getting them from someone else will make a difference.

      • Tmeuse89 says:

It doesnt help. They just sent me a response that the log in points have been changed to 40 points when the original points info stated it was 100. I emailed about the videos also and havn’t received a response yet.  No points received for sahring videos either.

    • Cornerstonegoc says:

Same here no points added since last week.

    • Lucubrate75 says:

YES and I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore! Sent a tweet on this matter to Earl Butch Graves no response, no telling what I may do next, especially after I lost over 5,000 points, feel like there is something fishy going on

    • Handleithandz says:

Yes i have watched several classes and made comments. Yet I only received credit for 1

    • Infinitehi4 says:

Not to worry after reading so many of us are having the same problem I emailed them and the response is they are aware of the problem and are checking into it.  I am sure there is some sort of tracking program in place for those of us who did not recieve points.

      • Lucubrate75 says:

The answer to the points problem may be in the rules, which I believe have change in order to deny that there is a problem with the points system, it states as follow: COMPLETION OF A TASK DOES NOT INDICATE THAT THE ENTRANT HAS BEEN OR WILL BE AWARDED THE POINTS ASSOCIATED WITH THAT TASK. SPONSOR RESERVES THE RIGHT, IN ITS SOLE AND ABSOLUTE DISCRETION, TO REJECT, DISQUALIFY AND OR REMOVE ANY ENTRANT AND/OR THE POINTS (OVER 5,000 OF MY POINTS HAS BEEN REMOVED) ASSOCIATED WITH ANY TASK FOR ANY ENTRANT THAT VIOLATES THESE OFFICIAL RULES WITHOUT ANY NOTIFICATION OR WARNING SO THAT EXPLAINS IT IN A NUT SHELL THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT RECEIVING POINTS OR HAD POINTS TAKEN AWAY MAY HAVE VIOLATED THE RULES HOW? YOU WILL NEVER KNOW BECAUSE THEY WILL NOT TELL YOU SO YOU CAN JUST STOP CRYING AND WORRYING ABOUT IT, JUST DEAL WITH IT AN MOVE ON. I READ THE RULES CAN’T FIGURE OUT HOW I VIOLATED THEM, I KNOW I’M A BIT OF A REBEL AT TIMES, SO I QUESS I HAVE BEEN EXPEL THAT IS WHY THEY REMOVED MY POINTS LOL I HAVE BIGGER FISH TO FRY ONE THING FOR SURE THEY ARE GOING TO REMEMBER MY NAME http://lucubrate.co

    • WLM says:

Try this. I had the same problem, but I notice that way back in a some previous lesson with Lynnette, it did not show as complete which stopped all the other from completing. Once I replayed it they started scoring. Maybe it will work for you.

    • Vettiej says:

      yes. so unfair.

    • lowster11 says:

who cares about the points besides a few of you that seem to be here for only that reason?

      • Fuzzy Spritz says:

We are obviously not here for the points Christopher as we are here for the information and continue to attend without the points. However, if they advertise points, etc. as an incentive then it should be working efficiently and everyone should have the same chances to win prizes or not. I think that’s fair.
