TWITTER: I know that this is probably an obvious one, but how do you really engage with Twitter? Do you use it as a personal tool to connect with others? Promote your business? Both? Do you need a personal and business account? I would say, it all depends. I have one account for me personally, which I also use professionally. When my new book, Chasing Youth Culture And Getting It Right, is published in April, I will be using another account for book tweets only. I want to make sure that those messages go to people who want data on youth marketing specifically. So the moral of this story is, know your target market. Your tweets will have a greater impact if you’re really focused on who you’re trying to reach.

Before the NBA lockout ended, SportsNetworker compiled a list of the “Top 10 Sports Business Professionals To Follow On Twitter,” highlighting individuals at major sports entities who will keep their followers abreast of the latest industry news. The list was diverse in that it included both men and women, however, none of the candidates were of color. Since the 2012 NBA season tipped off on Christmas Day, BlackEnterprise.com decided to compile a select list of Black professionals from sports media, marketing, public, and community relations that may have been overlooked. If you’re a basketball fan looking to keep your ear to the tweets, here are 10 sports business professionals of color to follow on Twitter. —Mia Hall

A White rapper had the hottest Super Bowl commercial, a Black tech startup accelerator changes the Web tech startup space and a homeless man gets his dream job because a YouTube video went viral. The year 2011 was epic in terms of showing how much impact technology has on our culture and has changed the way we communicate, launch businesses, and become informed about current events. As the final days on this year count down, I decided to take a look back on some of the great (and not-so-great) moments in technology for 2011. —Hajj Flemings

November 13, 2011 was a historical day for Blacks in tech as CNN's Black In America 4: The New Promised Land: Silicon Valley aired. The documentary followed eight entrepreneurs from around the country who relocated to Silicon Valley in the summer to launch their Web tech start-ups as part of the NewME Accelerator Program.
The documentary alone will not create a 100% meritocracy in Silicon Valley but has sparked discussion that didn't exist about Black Web tech start-ups. Kloudco founder Hank Williams did an interesting analyst in his "Tech Industry Silence is Deafening on #BlackInAmerica" post. Only three people from Rob Schoble's Influential Tech Industry list joined the discussion. With #BlackInAmerica being a trending topic the night of the doc’s premier, it’s not likely these tech savvy people missed it. As a note, popular start-up publication, TechCrunch, which routinely reports on the demo days and does extensive profiles of the other accelerator participants, didn't mention it at all. In response, here’s my 5-point recap. —Hajj Flemings

Huffington Post recently put together an impressive list of Women in Tech You Need to Follow on Twitter, showcasing some of the most dynamic women on the Web. We applaud their accomplishments and the doors they have opened for women. Unfortunately, of the 27 women listed, only two—Jenny Deluxe and Ory Okolloh—were Black digerati. The reality is there are many exceptionally remarkable Black women advancing technology and forming networks where women of all races can be mentored to become digital media iconoclasts. Noticing the oversight, BlackEnterprise.com compiled our own list of Black Women in Tech You Need to Follow on Twitter, including social media and technology influencers who push digital technology and new media daily on their blogs and various platforms. This list is by no means all-encompassing, but a step in giving credit where credit is rightfully due. —Marcia Wade Talbert

Twitter is a power platform for business users and entrepreneurs to humanize their brand and communicate their message directly with their audience. To fully optimize it as a business tool, though, you’ll have to use third party applications and other online tools. This is especially true for users who have to manage multiple Twitter accounts and conversations. Third party apps and tools provide users a richer Twitter experience and enable deeper engagement with their followers. Currently, 58% of published tweets come from official Twitter apps, while the remaining 42% come from third-party apps. Some only know Stanley "MC Hammer" Burrell for his Grammy award-winning legacy as a pioneering performer in hip-hop and pop culture. Others remember him more for his infamous financial woes and stints on reality TV. But don't put this entrepreneur and social media advocate in a box. He's kept the superstar momentum going in recent years with his dance community Web portal, DanceJam, and the founding of Alchemist Management, a mixed martial arts management company. Hammer's also reinvented himself as a social networking mogul (with more than 2 million Twitter followers), carving out yet another niche in his diverse career with high impact and visibility. An avid reader and sought-after speaker—having lectured at Oxford and Wharton and will be speaking this year at Black Enterprise's Entrepreneurs Conference in Atlanta (May 22-25), Hammer knows a thing or two about expanding one's knowledge of how to connect with audiences and use technology as a lucrative tool. BlackEnterprise.com caught up with the social media whiz on his favorite book picks for social media success.

The Twitterverse is constantly buzzing with an outlined play-by-play on the latest in news, entertainment and trending topics—to name a few on the long list of online conversation starters. Twitter users are, in total, sending an average of 55 million tweets a day, according to a Twitter study released last April. Of course, with all that chatter it's easy to block out a lot of it, but within all the noise there's still a large percentage that catches your attention in one way or another. In an effort to make sure you're not missing out on the valuable commentary and comments online, BlackEnterprise.com will now curate the tweets throughout the week staffers think were worth taking note of, whether an expert, celebrity or or even you masterminded the tweet. This week's Social Media Connection is Chris Curtis, a web business expert, business radio personality and author of the upcoming book Work the Web! The Webwise Guide to Business Online. In her own words, Curtis shares how she uses social media to achieve her business objectives: When it comes to Social Media, I've carved out my own little corners where I can post until my heart's content (or until my brain can't think of anything to type), and connect with people all over the world. As a business owner, its proven to be a successful way to reach out to others and pitch ideas, form collaborations and even find new contacts for my seminars and workshops. You'll be amazed by the people you meet, and you'll most likely find opportunities in places you never thought of. One note of caution: Be careful what you put in writing. When you're connected for business purposes, don't say anything that you wouldn't say to a prospective client or a business partner. Remember, you're exposing your writing to thousands - even millions - of people who might take exception to interpersonal expressions, if they're thinking about connecting with you to do business. Think before you post. Not sure where to start? Here's where I hang out...

Who are you connecting with on social media sites? Who's connecting with you? More importantly, why are you connected, and how are you using your presence in social media to advance your career, business, financial and lifestyle objectives? These are the questions we had in mind when we created this new BlackEnterprise.com feature, Social Media Connection. Lots of magazines, web sites, bloggers, etc. share all kinds of lists of who's who on Twitter and other social media sites. Our goal with Social Media Connection is to go a little deeper. Each week, we'll profile an entrepreneur, business expert, celebrity or other key influencer in a unique way: breaking down their presence on social media site by site—focusing on their favorites—and getting their insights on how they use that presence to achieve their business goals. Our objective is to give you insights and ideas from the most successful entrepreneurs, professionals and experts engaged in social media, insights you can use to achieve your own goals. To introduce this new feature, which will appear every Thursday, I've volunteered, as the editor-in-chief of BlackEnterprise.com, to be the guinea pig.
