Leaving First Boston without another job was considered risky. Only one friend told me to quit. Everybody else thought I was having an early midlife crisis and I should just go to another division or investment bank. I had no idea what to do. I felt like a failure. But it was an important brick wall to hit, and it happened at a good point in my career, because, truthfully, I just wasn’t on a path that was ever going to make me feel successful or happy. It forced me to deal with me.
