FBI Investigates an Explosion Near Colorado Springs NAACP Office
On Tuesday, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives went to the scene of a Colorado Springs National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) office to investigate the aftermath of an explosive device that was detonated against the exterior wall of the building.
Investigators, who gathered evidence from the scene, say the explosion did knock items off the building walls but fortunately didn’t cause any human injuries. Based off FBI reports, a gasoline can was placed next to the explosive device, but the contents did not ignite.
Officials are seeking a potential person of interest who they describe to be a balding white male, about 40-years-old.
“The investigation is ongoing and it is not known at this time if the NAACP or a business in the vicinity was the intended target,” Amy Sanders, an FBI special agent tells The Denver Post.
The president of the local NAACP chapter, Henry Allen Jr., told KOAA News that if his organization was the intended target of the attack, then it only means that they’re doing something right.
“We don’t give up the struggle. Apparently, we are doing something correct,” said Allen. “Apparently we have the attention of someone that knows we are working for civil rights for all.”
