Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, the rapper/actor who has been hospitalized since April 2, following a reported heart attack, has died. The rapper was reportedly on life support in a “vegetative state,” since he was admitted to the hospital.
According to People, DMX, who was 50, has died at White Plains Hospital in New York, a week after suffering a heart attack. His family confirmed the news.
“We are deeply saddened to announce today that our loved one, DMX, birth name of Earl Simmons, passed away at 50 years old at White Plains Hospital with his family by his side after being placed on life support for the past few days,” the family said in a written statement.
“Earl was a warrior who fought till the very end. He loved his family with all of his heart and we cherish the times we spent with him. Earl’s music inspired countless fans across the world and his iconic legacy will live on forever. We appreciate all of the love and support during this incredibly difficult time. Please respect our privacy as we grieve the loss of our brother, father, uncle, and the man the world knew as DMX. We will share information about his memorial service once details are finalized.”
DMX had an extensive battle with drug addiction, and the Yonkers emcee has been open about his struggles. His drug use began at 14 when a supposed mentor introduced a young Simmons to crack cocaine.
“He passed the blunt around and… I hit the blunt,” DMX recounted in an interview with Complex. “I never felt like this before it f*cked me up. I later found out that he laced the blunt with crack… Why would you do that to a child? He was like 30 and he knew I looked up to him. Why would you do that to someone who looks up to you?”
The hip-hop artist has attempted to overcome his addiction multiples times with his last rehab stint being in October 2019.
