Rescuing Communities of Color

With less than a week before President Obama's State of the Union Address, political and civic leaders urge administration to develop targeted programs for minority communities devastated by the Great Recession and subsequent jobless recovery. In reaction to findings from the report, The State of Communities of Color in the U.S. Economy, released today by the Center for American Progress, a nonpartisan research and education institute, Rep. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) and representatives from the National Urban League, National Congress of American Indians, National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development and National Council of La Raza, discussed a series of initiatives to remedy the situation.

Land of Opportunity

Kimberly Sloan and her husband Michael Saunders thought it was time to buy a house. “We wanted more room and a yard for our 4-year-old son,” says Sloan, a nurse living in suburban Los Angeles. “A few years ago though, homes in the neighborhood we liked were selling for $350,000 to $400,000, which we couldn’t afford.”
