Black Women Battling Obesity With New Initiatives

Though black women generally embrace their voluptuousness, they set their sights on keeping fit

African-American women have the highest obesity rate of any group of Americans, a new study by the CDC has found.

Four out of five black women have a body mass index above 25 percent, the threshold for being overweight or obese.

The Associated Press reports that many black women have embraced the idea that they’re generally heavier than other Americans, citing a recent Kaiser Family Foundation report that found that 66 percent of overweight black women had high self-esteem, while 41 percent of average-sized or thin white women had high self-esteem.

But black women around the nation, including high profile stars like Nicole Ari Parker, are devising approaches and initiatives to battle this growing problem.
