H.J. Russell founder Herman Russell is one of Atlanta’s most celebrated entrepreneurs. In the 1950s, Russell persevered against poverty and racism to create the largest black-owned construction firm in the nation. H.J. Russell grossed more than $369 million in revenues in 2008.

Over its 50-plus year history, H.J. Russell has built some of Atlanta’s notable landmarks. With Russell’s guidance, the company acquired several high-profile contracts including the Coca-Cola headquarters in 1987; the Georgia Dome in 1992; the Centennial Olympic Stadium/Turner Field in 1994; and Phillips Field in 1999.
